Conference presentation about mobile technologies taking the class outside
This Project linkedstudents fromWinterhill Schoolwith the MagnaScience AdventureCentre. These Rotherhamlocations have closelinks, being only acouple of miles apart. We wanted toexplore the potentialof QR Tags. We had avision wherebystudents could visitthe attraction, beinspired by theexhibits, then createdigital artefacts whichcould be viewed byvisitors at a later timeon mobile devices.
We started with visits. Eighty students agedtwelve to fifteen wentto Magna to explorethe different themedzones. They tookphotographs, recorded sounds, filmed and drewinspiration from theexhibits. They were told thatany creative work thatthey made, would beavailable to futureMagna visitorsthrough QR tags andmobile devices.
When the studentsreturned to theirclassrooms, theyworked with a digitalart specialist, anEnglish teacher, amusic teacher and aformer steel worker toforge their owninterpretations of theexhibits and makenew works inspired bythe place. We then made thesevarious artefactsavailable to visitorsthrough QR tags andmobile technology. It was a pilot and isstill ongoing. Thebody of work is stillgrowing.
