Created open funder registry in 2013 - it has gone well!
Funders - 17,500 no idea that many (like publishers don’t think there are 9000 publishers).
Actually entering the information is v complex. We created this widget which we thought would cover all potential workflows. If you put the funding body it’ll look it up (yay) but then sub orgs and award numbers have to be entered manually and it all gets a bit complicated (hence the issues we have).
items associated with funding
have a funder identifier with them
already have local identifiers. Cottage industry of research outputs NOW
With the steady increase in research outputs, and the growing number of active researchers from both academia and industry, research stakeholders find they need to be able to automate workflows in order to scale their systems efficiently. Funders want to be able to track the outputs that arise from research they have funded. As a result, institutions find themselves having to regularly analyse and summarise the research their faculty produces. Faculty, in turn, face increasing accounting bureaucracy in order to meet all the reporting requirements that are cascading through the system. And finally, publishers are seeking to make the manuscript submission and evaluation process more efficient as well as to increase the discoverability and contextual richness of their publications.
Fundamental problem - funders x publishers. Eek. Multiple bilateral agreements - pubs querying that many DOIs, or going to that many sites to get the info (and vice versa).
Stop researchers having to copy and paste! Duplicate data entry. Accuracy and speed. Automated so researchers can do more research.
Certain cases we decided not appropriate (ORCID). Can turn a local identifier into a global identifier (just append it to a prefix) which makes it individual. Persistable - redirectable (in case of splits and mergers). APIs - Researchfish and inst repos can use. Cross-disciplinary, international (no silos).
Do you know what these numbers are and what they have in common? Know which credit card will be entered. 50 = Amex, 34 Mastercard, 4 = Visa.
We’ll be able to do something similar with prefixes.
Few things to note. It’s v interesting talking to funders ‘weird problem that they outsource everything - grant management system vendors - MTS! We know systems and we know that the process involves touching technology and we’re used to facilitating that process and those convos.
