The Global Young Academy (GYA, https://globalyoungacademy.net) is an international organization of young researchers who are passionate about the role of science in creating a better world. Our two core activities revolve around capacity building among young researchers and enabling them to use this capacity to drive change through a wide range of activities. Open Science is a central topic in our activities as we see it essential to address global challenges, which requires research that is inclusive, effective, and conducive to collaboration and discovery across fields and locations, but Open Science is not without challenges, as everyone who is building their lab around this paradigm will know first hand.

Moritz Riede 1 December 2017 12 Open Science Summary ● Open Science radically changing the ways in which research is normally conducted and assessed ● Ghana, Bangladesh, Nigeria and potentially many other LMIC relying less on Open Source Software than expected by HIC ● Dire need for training and support in general software usage identifed in Ghana, Bangladesh and Nigeria ● Embracing Open Science often still very risky (required time, little reward in evaluation, etc.) ● Research system only changing slowly, but it seems to be changing ● There are already many opportunities and exciting projects embracing Open Science, and there will be more!
