I lived with my Nan when I went to drama school and persuaded her to let me record
her life story, growing up in colonial India. The theatre is my church.

Join us for a performative lecture by artist Jennifer Allen aka Quilla Constance ‘QC’, to explore the
negotiation of black female identities within pop culture and high art. Throughout the evening Allen will
present a selection of performative paintings and screen excerpts from her recent Arts Council England
commissioned video works – with reference to assertions by theorists ‘bell hooks’, Jacques Lacan, Rosi
Braidotti, Stuart Hall, José Esteban Muñoz and Sigmund Freud.
