4th of july

 1. 1. Do you know what holiday America celebrates a week from today?
Hint: You don’t have to come to school!!!
2. 2. 4th of July is CORRECT!
3. 3. Do you do anything special to celebrate the 4th of July?
4. 4. Many people celebrate the 4th of July with…

Bbqs or picnics
 5. 5. Parades
 6. 6. Fireworks

But… WHY do we celebrate the 4th of July in America?
Anyone have a guess?
7. 7. Imagine…
An older brother or sister told you what to do all the time and also kept taking your hard earned money!
Would you get mad?
8. 8. Well, that’s what happened in America between Britain and the colonists…
Vs.
BRITAIN
COLONISTS
9. 9.

Britain made lots of rules for the colonists to follow.
 10. 10. And made them pay lots of taxes.

On July, 4th, 1776 the leaders of the colonists agreed on the “Declaration of Independence” which told Britain the colonists were going to become their own country.
11. 11. Now… the “Declaration of Independence” didn’t make everything better… there was a lot more fighting between the British and the colonists but it was a start and that’s whywe still celebrate it today!
It reminds us of the “birth of our country”- it is like a big birthday party for America!
12. 12. But… let’s back up a bit…
It’s great the 4th of July gives us a reason to PARTY! But why were the British bossing around the colonies in the first place? And who were these colonists???
13. 13. This summer we’re going to take a trip back in time… to COLONIAL AMERICA!
Colonial America
14. 14. Before we begin… what do you already know about Colonial America? It is ok if you don’t know a lot- that’s why we’re going to learn about them!
Think about:

How many colonies were there?
 15. 15. Where were they?
 16. 16. Who was in charge?
 17. 17. Why were there colonies?
 18. 18. Clothing
