2016 Monitor Awards Gold Winners: Annuities

Corporate Insight is pleased to introduce the results of our tenth annual Annuity Monitor Awards. We benchmark the annuity industry across five crucial categories, awarding gold, silver and bronze medals in each based on how firms meet our criteria.
As in past years, the Gold Medal is reserved for offerings that provide an exceptionally valuable service. The Silver Medal goes to features that offer similar value but lack some of the outstanding attributes and functions of the best offerings, and the Bronze Medal is awarded to features that offer an excellent or unique service but do not meet the highest standards for a given category. This year, we look at five categories—Public Site Product Information, Annuity Education Tools, Client Management Capabilities, Advisor Sales and Prospecting Materials, and Advisor Book of Business Offerings—and assign gold, silver and bronze medals to the top performers in each category.

  6. 6. Firms should strive to present a full picture of their product offerings online. For prospects, educating themselves on annuity products is often a key first step in the sales process. We thus consider the availability of public annuity product information for this category, with an emphasis on the amount of product detail for available annuities and optional riders. Our assessment looked at the structure of annuity product pages, the supplemental literature and multimedia resources included, and the findability of this information. Public Product Information 6 Each of our leaders offers comprehensive performance information for variable annuities in organized performance centers with viewing options that include sorting and filtering. All award winners make product information for product overview information easily findable from the homepage. Our gold winner, Jackson National, particularly excels by promoting performance information from its homepage. © CORPORATE INSIGHT
  7. 7. This year, firms began addressing the lack of calculators that explain and emphasize the need for an annuity. Accordingly, we have introduced our inaugural Annuity Education Tools award category. These product selection tools allow prospects to glean whether and how annuities can fit into their investment portfolios. Our assessment considered the location of tools throughout public sites, the level of data mining and the education their results offered. Annuity Education Tools 7 USAA is awarded the gold medal for its product selector quiz, which incorporates basic information on the importance of savings and term definitions in balloon tips. USAA prospects highly benefit from the capability afforded by the tool to ascertain whether an annuity will fit their retirement savings needs. © CORPORATE INSIGHT
  8. 8. As clients’ needs change, they need the ability to adjust beneficiaries, asset allocation, addresses and other annuity account information online. For this category, we focused on findability, interface design and client support when assessing firms. Available transactions vary by firm but, at a minimum, all leading firms include the ability to change asset allocation for variable annuities. Client Transaction Capabilities 8 Fidelity excels in this category, earning a gold medal for its excellent help resources and the ability to contribute to or withdraw from an annuity online. Clients can locate a wide range of functionality, such as the abilities to withdraw and contribute to annuities, from tabs on the private site homepage and links on the Accounts & Trade flyout menu. © CORPORATE INSIGHT
  9. 9. This category focuses on the availability and depth of advisor product literature, sales presentations and prospecting materials. Manageable platforms boast search, sort and filter options, and comprehensive ordering and favoriting capabilities facilitate repeat retrieval of popular and frequently relied upon materials. Our assessment took the persona of an advisor logging in to the site to obtain key materials for selling an annuity. Advisor Sales and Prospecting Materials 9 Jackson National is a repeat winner with its third consecutive gold medal in this category for its strong array of marketing and sales materials. Jackson houses its materials within an organized Advisor Marketing Center with filter, search and ordering capabilities. © CORPORATE INSIGHT
  10. 10. Annuity Monitor instituted advisor site books of business offerings as an award category for the first time in 2016. As we reviewed the book of business on each advisor site, we took on the persona of an advisor looking for an overview of inforce contracts, an update on any pending contracts, a review of a client’s contract information or a transaction to perform on a client’s behalf. Firms ranked well for featuring a well-organized book of business that includes a wealth of details. Advisor Book of Business Offerings 10 Jackson National wins a gold medal for its detailed table of accounts, wealth of sort and filter options, customizable homepage account watch list and comprehensive reports available for download. © CORPORATE INSIGHT
