1. How Stormwater Treatment Trains Work
A stormwater treatment train typically consists of pretreatment, detention, and filtration in an integrated system.
Why is Stormwater Management Important?
Stormwater is rainwater and melted snow that runs off streets, parking lots,
roofs, and other impervious surfaces. When stormwater is absorbed into
the ground, it is filtered and ultimately replenishes aquifers or flows into
streams and rivers. In developed areas, the water runs rapidly into storm
drains, sewer systems, and drainage ditches and can cause:
• Downstream flooding
• Stream bank erosion
• Increased turbidity (muddiness created by stirred up sediment)
• Habitat destruction
• Changes in the stream flow
• Combined sewer overflows
• Infrastructure damage
• Contaminated streams, rivers, and coastal water
Proper stormwater management can mitigate these issues.
Two Essential Functions of a
Stormwater Management System
1. Water Quantity Control - Maintaining
pre-development hydrology to minimize
downstream erosion and flooding
2. Water Quality Control - preventing
pollutants from impacting our waterways

Rainwater Harvesting
Pretreatment – Improves
water quality by removing
trash, debris, and solids,
and reduces maintenance
of downstream structures.
Detention/Infiltration
– Reduces the quantity of
stormwater runoff leaving
a site by temporarily
storing the runoff and
releasing it slowly over
time to surrounding soils or
downstream facilities.
Optional Filtration –
Improves water quality by
filtering runoff to remove the
most challenging pollutants,
including fine solids, heavy
metals, and nutrients.
Rainwater Harvesting - With
the addition of pumps and
controls, captured runoff can
be used on site for irrigation
and other non-potable uses
thereby reducing runoff.
