AAO-HNS Encourages Payer Coverage for Balloon Sinus Dilation

  1. 1.  Previously based in Chicago, Dr. Angelo Consiglio relocated his medical practice Allergy Ear Nose & Throat, Inc., to the Key West-Marathon, Florida, area in 2010. Angelo Consiglio, MD, also contributes to the medical field as a lecturer on the minimally-invasive balloon sinus dilation procedure for patients with acute and chronic sinusitis. In 2014, the American Academy of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) issued a statement to encourage payer policy coverage for balloon sinus dilation as a valuable therapeutic option for individuals with sinusitis.
  2. 2.  The AAO-HNS reached its conclusion on the medical value of balloon sinus dilation through careful review of the best evidence available, which was analyzed by relevant clinical committees and several panels of AAO-HNS directors. Based on the extent of utilized evidence and the processes associated with creating guidance documents, the AAO-HNS proposes that all payers consider the organization’s position statements when determining treatment coverage since the determination can significantly impact a patient’s access to quality care. The AAO-HNS further recommended that payers use its position statement on sinus dilation as a primary reference and foundation for coverage.
