  2. 2. opinionTheIt canworkforyouIt canruinlivesPR expert Max Markson saysnegativity is not always badAnti-bullying lobbyist ChloeCunningham says it has to stopHate campaigns can sometimes lead toeven greater success. If you’re a majorcelebrity, then there are always going to behaters out there who want to pull you down;when you’re a star and you’re out therewith a big personality, you’re going toget it whatever you do. Even if you win anOscar, or if you’re top of the charts, peopleare still going to criticise you – but whathappens then is that you get the sympathyvote. Certain people that might have beenambivalent, and previously said, ‘Oh, I don’tcare’, then see someone getting knockeddown and come out in support of the star. That’s starting to happen with AnneHathaway already. At the end of the day,she gave a spectacular performance, shestood out from a star-studded cast and shewon an Oscar – she had the last laugh. Shehas done really well, and she has people’ssympathy now, too. My advice to celebs inher position is to respond with dignity, riseabove it and ignore it totally. If you want torespond, you’re going to get a reaction, andit stirs everybody up – fuelling the fire. Butyou can come out of it well if you treat itwith a sense of humour. You can win there. As the co-founder of anti-bullying campaignAngels Goal Inc (angelsgoal.org.au), Iveseen firsthand that bullying is a life-ruining,worldwide epidemic. It has become part ofour culture, but just because someone is acelebrity does not justify denigrating them.In an ideal world, we’d all be treated withrespect and compassion. Unfortunately,A-listers make for easy targets – because oftheir lifestyles, which can trigger jealousy, and because they are often in the public eye.But it’s important to remember they are notimmune from getting hurt and have feelingsjust like the rest of us. Celebs can also endup being psychologically damaged – noweven more so, thanks to the immediacy ofsocial media. Just look at One DirectionsHarry Styles – the 19-year-old broke downafter reading venomous tweets about him.‘I had a look at what people were sayingabout me,’ he says. ‘I’ve always wanted to beone of those people who didn’t really carethat much about what people thought aboutthem but I just don’t think I am.’ We tend toforget that celebs are entitled to the samehuman rights and should be treated withthe same respect as others.
