  4. 4. PurposeThis educational tour exposes participants to the states economy,government and politics, culture, educational systems, health and socialissues, history, and geographyDesigned to increase mutual knowledge and understanding between theuniversity and the people and communities of the state, the tour:introduces participants to the places the majority of our students callhome, encourages university service to the public, suggests ways facultycan help address state issues through research, scholarship and creativeactivityIn addition the experience is expected to develop beneficial ties andpromote interdisciplinary discussion among the touring faculty

Goals•Develop among faculty an awareness of the states distinctivegeography, economy, culture, government and politics, history,educational systems, health and social issues• Learn about the communities that a majority of our students call home• Encourage service to the public and research to address state problems•Show how the University of Michigan is connected to the entire state•Introduce faculty to the Michigan some of them might otherwise neversee•Promote interaction among faculty across the disciplines•Have fun

Overview• The 2012 Selection Committee made up of past scholars was chaired by Nancy Allee, Deputy Director of the Health Sciences Library• The annual Michigan Road Scholars tour is funded jointly by the Provosts office and the Office of the Vice President for Government Relations.• Tour planning and staffing come from the State Outreach group in the Office of the Vice President for Government Relations. • Dana Sitzler, Associate Director, MRS Coordinator • Veronica Johnson, Lansing Service Center Director • Michael Rein, Associate Director • Linda Scharer, Web Designer Associate • Robyn Snyder, Administrative Support

TransportationWe will be traveling on a 54-passenger Royal Transportation motor coach.The coach comes equipped with the following: *air-conditioning *video cassette recorder and six monitors *bathroom *reclining seats *galley for a cooler/snacks *audio system and microphone *overhead storage *individual controls for lights/air-conditioning

Stuff* Snacks/beverages will be provided in coolers in the back of the bus* We encourage you to sit with somebody new each day* Have your bags on the bus 15 minutes prior to departure* The bus driver will handle loading/unloading, but we ask that you carry your own bags to the curb each day - unless you need assistance* We encourage you not to bring more than two bags (ONE would be better!)* Follow Car – Grad Assistant

Other Stuff•Wear your shirt on the first day•Arrive @ Fleming Building by 6:30 AM on Monday – bus will leave at 7:00 AM; Return by 6:15 PM on Friday•Parking @ Thompson St. Structure on 7th floor – (blue/gold pass – we can provide a pass for the week but you need to let us know)• Long Days• Very Important to be on time• Limit use of ‘technology’ while at sites – internet at hotels• MRS Facebook site / Twitter• Fun and Learning
