  • Our data center footprint is global, spanning 5 continents with highly redundant clusters of data centers in each region. Our footprint is expanding continuously as we increase capacity, redundancy and add locations to meet the needs of our customers around the world.
  • We see our customers do amazing things when they reduce the cost of experimentation- it moves IT from being a roadblock, where each idea costs lots of money and takes lots of time, to being an enabler where you can launch a speculative project quickly and cheaply. It allows firms to take more chances on ideas, and gives them a shot at winning big, as opposed to being scared to even try.
  • NASDAQ had an idea for a new service that could benefit their customers. However, if they had to invest a huge amount up front for traditional data center equipment for a speculative project, they likely wouldn’t have gone ahead with it. With AWS, they were able to test the concept quickly and cheaply, and then move into full production without a great deal of risk. This is a great example of the innovation that AWS can facilitate by lowering the barrier to entry and reducing the cost and risk of trying something new.In their own words:In today’s market, the financial services industry is challenged to do more with less. NASDAQ OMX developed FinQloud to help customer reduce costs and innovate. By leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch a scalable solution in a highly secure environment, FinQloud customers can reduce operational costs by up to 80%.
  • This is a point of reference about our scale- in 2003, Amazon.com was a $5+ Billion technology powered retail business. When we measured the capacity growth rate of our current AWS environments, we found that we add enough server capacity to power all of the 2003 era Amazon business, EVERY DAY.As an additional point of comparison, $5Billion revenue puts you right around 400 in the Fortune 500- that means that we’re adding enough capacity to power a pretty big stand alone company- For some perspective on this, some examples of companies with revenues right around $5 Billion include Charles Schwab, Clorox, Harley Davidson and VMWare.
  • #4: drive down IT labor costs: The Cloud makes developers, admins and ops managers more efficient. By removing time spent on procuring or managing infrastructure they can work faster and in many cases build & manage more apps per person – lowering the labor costs per app dramaticallyAccording to research conducted by IDC, customers using AWS spend ½ as much on people costs per app than for similar apps that run on-premises
