    1. 1. FRANCOIS BRUNERY was born in Turin, Italy in 1849 and died in 1906.  He studied in Paris under Jean Leon Gerome (1824-1904) and Leon Joseph Bonnat (1834-1923), both important 19th century academic painters.  By the late 1800's, Brunery held a reputation as the leading artist in the genre known as Cardinal Paintings . He began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1880 and received an honorable mention in 1903.
