Why We’re Here Started in 2007 by Google and Intel, Climate Savers Computing Initiative is a nonprofit group of businesses, conservation organizations and consumers dedicated to reducing the energy consumption of computers and reducing the environmental impact of new and emerging technologies. More than 500 organizations — representing many of the world’s biggest brands — have joined forces so far. The fight against IT-related energy waste unites us all.

  37. 37. Power Management Myths Myth: I can’t make a compelling business case for power management. Fact: Enabling automatic power management can save you more than $60 a year in energy costs, per computer. Multiply these easy savings by hundreds or thousands of computers, consider that power management implementation is much faster and less complex than other IT programs, and the business case becomes too great to ignore.
  38. 38. Power Management Myths Myth: Until I buy newer, more energy-efficient hardware, there’s nothing I can do to conserve energy. Fact: Automating power management features that are already built into standard PCs is the best first step — but 90 percent of users never enable them. CSCI connects members to tools and resources that streamline the deployment of system-wide power management technologies.
  39. 39. Power Management Myths Myth: The power used in turning on my PC negates any benefits of turning it off. Fact: The average computer wastes nearly 50 percent of the power it pulls from the wall. The small power surge that comes from powering up is no match for the drain that comes from leaving it on for an extended period of time.
  40. 40. Power Management Myths Myth: Screen savers help me save energy. Fact: Those tropical island photos may reduce your stress level, but they actually increase your PC’s energy consumption level. Allow your monitor to go into hibernate or sleep mode when not in use, and you’ll be taking one more step toward protecting our planet’s actual vacation vistas.
  41. 41. Power Management Myths Myth: Turning a PC on and off reduces its performance and useful life. Fact: Turning a PC on and off does not wear it out more quickly. The less time a PC is on, the longer it will last. PCs also produce heat, so turning them off reduces building cooling loads. Modern computers are designed to handle 40,000 on-off cycles before failure, and it is unlikely to approach that number, even if you keep your computer 5-7 years. Some studies indicate it would require on-off cycling every five minutes to harm a hard drive.
  42. 42. Power Management Myths Myth: I can’t run updates, backups and patches when a PC is in a lower power state. Fact: Including wake-up call strategies in your power management implementation will ensure your PCs never oversleep for important deadlines. You can configure computers to apply software patches and updates as soon as computers become available on the network, or program Windows Task Scheduler to wake sleeping computers for updates. Activating and utilizing Wake-on-LAN features would also allow you to wake sleeping machines at any time.
  43. 43. Power Management Myths Myth: My PC users won’t tolerate any downtime for power management. Fact: With proper power management, a user’s downtime and a PC’s downtime are one and the same. When a user steps away from their system for a while, their computer and monitor go on break. A simple touch of the mouse or keyboard gets things up and running again in the time it takes to sit back down. It’s hard to argue with that kind of equality.
