The City of Puyallup and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) worked together to redesign and rehabilitate the Meridian Railroad crossing in Downtown Puyallup over the weekend of April 13th, 2013. The goals of the rehabilitation were to replace the failing asphalt pavement, resurface the railroad bed and provide a more durable crossing surface that was more conducive to future railroad maintenance.
The use of concrete for the roadway provides a ridged surface which is much less prone to heaving and warping than the asphalt it replaced. The ridged nature of the concrete allows BNSF to conduct maintenance activities without having to remove or replace pavement. The actual construction utilized a specialized accelerated set concrete mixture to minimize road closure time.
The crossing was closed at approximately 5:30 pm on Friday, April 12th and all work was completed over the weekend in time for the road to open at 8:00 am Monday, April 15th.
