  • Every server that is provisioned in the Cisco Unified Computing System is specified by a service profile. They contain state information, are user defined, and are applied to physical blades at run time. Profiles are necessary for consistent and simplified server deployment and allow you to pay as you grow. Simplify server upgrades to minimize risk by dissociating server profiles from existing chassis/blades and associate it to the new chassis/blade. Experience enhanced server availability and purchases fewer servers for high availability. You can use the same pool of standby servers for multiple server types, just apply the appropriate profile during failover.
  • Use a service profile with the policies set forth by your organization in addition to the UIDs, resources, and pool data to create a template. You then create as many service profiles as you would like, each exactly the same.

Reduced Labor Cost: Service profile templates reduce labor cost by saving time to create service profiles

Reduced Error Rate: With a standardized service profile template reduce errors by ensuring all service profiles are built the same way.

Simplified Tool Portfolio: The combined capabilities of Cisco UCS Manager and templates may allow the elimination of third-party firmware management tools.
  • On other blade systems, companies implementing large, virtualized SQL Server workloads often find their systems do not have enough I/O to service the workloads and must resort to adding more blades and/or ports to their environment. This risk is reduced considerably on Cisco UCS due to its implementation of converged adapters. The Cisco UCS Virtual Interface Card 1280, 1240 and 1225 adapter cards have the ability to expose up to 256 NIC and/or HBA devices to a host and can provide between 20 Gb (1225) to 80 Gb (1280/1240) of network throughput. Network and storage bandwidth is paramount for successfully consolidating SQL Server workloads and these highly innovative adapter cards from Cisco make UCS a very attractive server platform for virtualized SQL Server workloads.
  • Together, Cisco and Microsoft provide an integrated management experience for both bare metal and virtual workloads. Cisco UCS Manager provides flexible, standards-based management tools and interfaces through a comprehensive, open XML API that works with and extends the Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 suite of tools.

Free Cisco integration and management packs along with Microsoft tools make it easy to:
Proactively manage and monitor your Cisco UCS Hardware with Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager
Automate, standardize and extend Cisco UCS deployment and management with Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Orchestrator
View and manage Cisco UCS infrastructure directly from SCVMM with the UI Extension Add-in for Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager

  • PowerShell’s use across Microsoft operating systems and applications makes Cisco’s UCS PowerTool incredibly valuable.

Reduce your administrative and operational overhead while decreasing your automation time with UCS PowerTool.

It’s an easy to use, extensive PowerShell library of purpose-built cmdlets to automate provisioning and configuration tasks for Cisco UCS and Nexus 1000V.

  • With UCS PowerTool for PowerShell (Management with Hyper-V integration), you can manage a unified system center to deliver MS Cloud solutions.

Manage WS 2012 R2 physical and virtual environment supported by Cisco UCS and Cisco Virtual Networking Infrastructure
UCSM integration is available for SC 2012 R2
N1KV Switch Extension for Hyper-V is available with SC2012 R2
  • Here we have a Cisco UCS chassis and SQL Servers installed bare metal with application and web servers installed on virtual machines. <click>
The SCOM (SKOM) management pack is monitoring the UCS system and picks up that one of the blades went silent. <click>
So what do we do? We launch a PowerShell script through our PowerTool interface. <click>
Next we speak to the XML API. This example shows a picture of UCS Manager, but really we are just talking to the XML API. <click>
Now we ask the XML API to un-associate that specific service profile from the faulty blade, <click>
…and associate with a spare blade in the chassis <click>
Once the service profile is associated with the new blade, within 5-7 minutes… <click>
That blade comes up and it looks exactly the same as the other blade did on the network! <click>
  • The Microsoft and Cisco alliance extends the value the Cisco Unified Data Center and SQL Server, including:

    Unified fabric
    Cisco UCS
    Unified management

Together, Microsoft and Cisco offer service and support to accelerate time-to-value and ROI. Take advantage of an ultimate unified computing and network infrastructure for your private cloud environment and optimize your infrastructure today.
