  • Imperialism

    1. 1. Imperialism By Ciera Johnson
    2. 2. Imperialism DefinedImperialism is when one state is superior, andtakes control over other lands that are not asstrong.Colonialism is when a state politically controlsanother state and make the most of theireconomy.Annexation is when a state or land is taken andmade part of another state.
    3. 3. Social Darwinism Definition: The theory that people or society that are stronger will live on an weaker countries will be taken over. If someone were to take over another country by mutual diplomacy then they would have a right in Imperialism. I believe people could use darwinism as a way to have leadership of the country and have the leaders in agreement.
    4. 4. "White Mans Burden"Definition: It means that white men have theresponsibility to “take care of” othercountries that were primitive. This sayingoriginally came from a Poem called “TheWhite Mans Burden”.
    5. 5. Racism and the Missionary Impulse Racism is the hatred or discrimination against another person because of their race or belief. Paternalism is the practice of people with higher authority restricting the freedom of people subordinate to them based on their supposed best interest. This could be considered racist if it were a white man to a black person or slave. Missionaries actions could be categorized as paternalistic because it was a way of saying that it was in a persons best interest to believe and join God.
    6. 6. The Scramble for AfricaIt occurred in the 1800s to 1914 when European colonialrivalries invaded and occupied Africa.Liberia and Ethiopia were the only two countries that were notcolonized during this time. The Berlin Conference defused the disputes and set guidelinesto colonization and trade in Africa for the Europeans.
    7. 7. NationalismNationalism is the pride in one’s country from their countries strength, size, industrial production and the person’s willingness to die for it.
    8. 8. Colonized vs. the ColonizersAn industrialized nation would havemore advanced machinery, weapons, andgovernment that would make it easier totake over a less “civilized” country.I would assume the people would beinfuriated and try to rebel against theenemy.
