How to learn a new software tool
1. Have a goal in mind
2. Try it out
3. Find the official docs
4. Find the unofficial docs
5. Phone a friend
6. Write your own tutorials
I learned SketchUp in the last couple days using this method!
Have a goal in mind.
It is really difficult to learn without a concrete goal.
Pick a real task to complete with the software and make that
your goal. Learn to the task, learn by doing.
Try it out
Good software is intuitive.
Give yourself 15-30 minutes to try it out. Learn what things are
called, get a general idea of how it works, and try to do
something with it. With a lot of software you won't need to go
past this stage.
Find the official docs.
Documentation, support, help, guides, manual, reference, etc.
Find the unofficial docs.
Youtube, blogs, Quora, StackOverflow, community forums.
Ask your network.
You'd be surprised how much your friends know (especially
Praxians!), and everyone likes to share what they know.
Tip for asking for help: Demonstrate that you tried on your own.
People like to help those who help themselves.
Make your own tutorial.
1. You learn a lot by teaching.
2. Help others.
3. Get awesome blog traffic!
What tools should I learn?
1. Whatever the company you are pitching uses
2. Industry leaders

crash.co/career-guides
What makes good proof?
1. Using the tool how it is used in the workplace
(Selling/marketing/operating/engineering/helping
customers with/designing something)
2. Projects over explainer videos
3. Real/tangible
4. Goes beyond the surface
Examples
• Set up a CRM for a company. Explain your design decisions,
write about your roadblocks and how you solved them.
• Sign up for a company's email lists and map out their email
drip sequence. Rebuild it!
• Build a Drift chatbot that answer's a real company's FAQs
• Download one of NYC's open data sets. Analyze it, visualize
it, and write about exactly how you used each tool.
• Rebuild an existing app as closely as you can using no-code
tools. Write about your roadblocks and how you solved
them.
• Build a 6-month marketing and sales pipeline/funnel growth
forecast model in Excel. Google around and find someone's
real numbers and forecast different scenarios.
