  • Interesting time andbooming business for the education branch
  • Schools are still pretty much organized on factory lines; ringing bells, separate facilities; specialised into separate subjects. We still educate children by batches. We put them through the system by age group-----------------If you are interested in the model of learning, you don’t start from this production-line mentality.---------------Industrial model of education (metaphor), a manufacturing model, which is based on linearity and conformityand batching people.--------------------------------It is essentially about conformity and increasingly it is about that as you look at the growth of standardised testing and standardised curricula. And it is about standardisation.------------------Human organisations are much more like organisms. That is to say, they depend upon feelings and relationships and motivation and value, self-value and a sense of identity and of community. You know the way you work in an organisation is deeply affected by your feeling for it. Therefore, I think a much better metaphor is not industrialism but agriculture or an organic metaphor.----------------------Leer de voorgeschreven stof en slaag voor het examen.
  • People want to feel successful and make progress, and they want to have fun with friends. We have it within our grasp to form systems of education based on these different principles but it means a shift from the industrial metaphor of education to what I think of as an agricultural metaphor.-------------Industrial model of education (metaphor), a manufacturing model, which is based on linearity and conformity and batching people.--------------Agricultural Model of education (metaphor) Create the conditions under which students will begin to flourish.---------------We have to recognize that the heart of educational improvement is improving the experience of individual learners and treating each school individually and not as a mass.
  • One of the real challenges is to innovate fundamentally in education. Innovation is hard because it means doing something that people don't find very easy, for the most part. It means challenging what we take for granted, things that we think are obvious. The great problem for reform or transformation is the tyranny of common sense; things that people think, "Well, it can't be done any other way because that's the way it's done.“----------------------------For as long as Governments think that it is about managing the system more efficiently, rather than improving the quality of learning, we’re in a mess. Nothing will improve it. Let’sbe more efficient
  • Humanitygrowth: alsobynumbersWe will more and more beawarethat we live in a worldwithlimited resources. Educationalneed:ValuableEnjoy/funOrganicGive me the toolsI know what i wantWhere is itCreateCollaborateOpenShare-------------------------Our children are living in the most intensely stimulating period in the history of the earth. They are being besieged with information and calls for their attention, from every platform; computers, from iPhones, from advertising hoardings, from hundreds of television channels and we are penalising them now for getting distracted (take your pills and focus!!!). From what? Boring stuff, at school, for the most part.
  • Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB)specializes in investments in incubation and early stage companies. Since its founding in 1972, KPCB has backed entrepreneurs in more than 500 ventures including AOL, Amazon.com, Citrix, Compaq,Google, Zynga. (KPCB Digital Growth Fund is backer of Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, Groupon, Square, Klout, Waze, Shazam, Spotify, Flipboardetc.)--------------------------------------KPCB is highly respected within the industry, and is regarded as having the best track record of building world-class companies. As such, an investment by KPCB is considered a sign that a company has great potential.------------------------------KPCB backed Courserafor 16 Million----------------------------
  • 2tor is the first startup of its kind to offer full degree programs online at top-tier universities. 2tor partners with universities across the country to help them build and market their own online degree programs. 2tor is making waves for its web-based infrastructure that allows professors to easily share information with students, create interactive lessons, and provide lectures and opportunities for social interaction among students. Its iPad and iPhone apps even allow students to participate on the go. These varied services are allowing 2tor to lead the way as an online education startup----------------Courseralooks to provide courses across a broad range of disciplines, including medicine, literature, history, and computer science. We are a social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. We envision a future where the top universities are educating not only thousands of students, but millions. Our technology enables the best professors to teach tens or hundreds of thousands of students. Through this, we hope to give everyone access to the world-class education that has so far been available only to a select few. We want to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.Work with smart, creative, and passionate people in an open and collaborative environment solvingchallengingproblemsthat will impact millions of students and change the face of education---------------------Udemy is unique because it allows anyone to take or build an online course, not just colleges and universities. Udemy was founded in February 2010 Udemy offers more than 6000 courses and 25000 total lectures. Some courses are free, others are paid.Instructors can implement videos, PowerPoints, zip files, audio files, and PDFs to create a course and share it with the world. The site offers courses on technology, business, music, art, languages, math, science, games, sports, and more. The basic premise is to crowdsource education. Much like blogging allows anyone to share information, Udemy allows anyone to create courses with nothing more than an internet connection. Many individuals with a desire to learn are cut out of the education system by rising tuition, housing, and commuting costs, but Udemy empowers anyone to share and learn at a more affordable rate.---------------------KhanAcademy focusses mainly on K-12 courses----------------------2Tor has raised $96 million to date.Coursera16 Million - Knewton ontving dit jaar 54 miljoen dollar van investeerders en Coursekit 6 miljoenCodecademy has raised $10 million in a second round of financingCoursera Inc., a startup that specializes in bringing free university classes to the Web, raised $16 million fromTutorspree, a NY-based online platform for tutors to market themselves across the country, recently disclosed that they have raised $1 million primarily from SequoiaCapitalKhan Academy – 2 million from Google (2010). 5 million from Ireland-based The O'Sullivan Foundation (2011)
  • Entrepreneurs are showing how easy it is to flip the educational process — in other words, to use video and advanced web platforms to make learning more affordable and effective.
  • StanfordLectures, courses and concerts have been downloaded 50 million times, as interest in online education grows. In subjects ranging from human behavior to linguistics, Stanford lectures captured on audio and video and offered on Stanford's iTunes U have been downloaded a whopping 50 million times. (april 2012)The learning content offered by Stanford and Open University is but a fraction of available courses distributed by Apple's iTunes U, which boasts more than 500,000 free lectures, books and videos from over 1,000 schools including prestigious institutions like Duke, MIT and Yale.------------------------MIT OPENCOURSEWAREMIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a web-based publication of virtually all MIT course content. OCW is open and available to the world and is a permanent MIT activity. 2100 Courses. -----------------edX: MIT and Harvard have partnered to create edX. Where the universities will offer courses online for free. It's scheduled to launch in the fall of 2012. MIT and Harvard are both investing $ 30 mln.------------------------EdX is a not-for-profit enterprise of its founding partners Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that features learning designed specifically for interactive study via the web. Based on a long history of collaboration and their shared educational missions, the founders are creating a new online-learning experience with online courses that reflect their disciplinary breadth. Along with offering online courses, the institutions will use edX to research how students learn and how technology can transform learning–both on-campus and worldwide. Announced on May 2, EdX is the joint creation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard. The partnership strives to bring online learning to people across the globe and offers online classes for free. EdX courses include videos, quizzes, feedback, and more to help students navigate the material. This month, the service received a $1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which shows just how much potential online education programs have to grow.Open University, the widely popular source of free course content on iTunes U, is the first in Europe to reach more than one million active subscriptions through the iTunes U app since it launched back on 19 January. The OU’s 52 courses on the app add to the University’s extensive material on iTunes U which in another European first, has now seen more than 50 million international downloads, with over 40,000 new downloads each day.
  • If you were to gather together a thousand academics, researchers, university IT and instructional technology leaders, institutional librarians, technology and media company executives, authors, journalists, futurists, association presidents, and other interested people and ask them to consider the possible impact of the Internet on higher education, the outlook you'd get would closely resemble the rich patchwork of perspective offered: most of them would say there's a lot of change coming.-----------------------------The multi-year project at the North Carolina institution, produced with the Pew Research Center, has taken on the ambitious job of recording what people expect "for the future of communications and the future of the world," according to text on its Web site. In this case, the researchers presented two scenarios describing higher education in 2020 and asked Internet experts, researchers, observers, and users which of the two they most agreed with and why. One scenario suggested that it wouldn't be much different from the way it is now; the other suggested it would be quite different. Responses came from 1,021 people.---------------------------For now, class attendance, in-person participation and on-campus commitment are key factors of college success. In the future, that may all change. Teleconferencing, online universities and distance learning will lead to hybrid campuses, experts said. Hybrid campuses will incorporate online learning plus in-person class meetings.---------------------------"There will be mass adoption of teleconferencing and distance learning to leverage expert resources [and] a transition to 'hybrid' classes that combine online learning components with less-frequent on-campus, in-person class meetings." In other words, most people said they thought education would be quite different. In that scenario, most universities would shift graduation requirements to more "individually oriented" and "customized outcomes."
  • X-asen Y-as:Sustaining: innovaties die huidige opleidingsinstituten en organisaties handhavenDisruptive: huidige bestaande situaties afbreken en opnieuw opbouwen (radicaal). Bijvoorbeeld KhanAcademy. ------------Voorbeelden: Transform:KhanAcademy vision:creating an interactive, personalized education system. KhanCodeGive students the power to createedX-----------------------------------Einstein quote: insanity isdoing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. ----------------------------------Governments think that it is about managing the system more efficiently, rather than improving the quality of learning-------------------------------jobs-to-be-donedimension of Colleges andUniversities:What is their job? their task is to enable their students to do the job that they’re trying to do-----------------------The majority of educators operate as if the delivery of education (their product) is their objective. The activities in schools generally are not integrated in ways to help students be successful every day—even though doing so is crucial to having schools nail their own jobs, which are increasingly to educate every student adequately and have each one graduate from high school
  • Then:Sustaining innovation: cloning and improving a traditional learning systemReform: improve a broken modelEvolution: Almost all our effort go into getting a better version of education system that was developed in 1990Tyranny of common sense: things that people think, "Well, it can't be done any other way because that's the way it's done."-----------------------------------Now---------------------------------. What we need is not evolution, but a revolution in education. This has to be transformed into something else.Think differently!
  • Reform is no use anymore, because that's simply improving a broken model. What we need is not evolution, but a revolution in education. This has to be transformed into something else.------------------------------- WYS&DIWYG&L: What you see&do is what you get&learn -> Interactiefleermediumzorgtdat je visueelkuntkijkennaar effect/resultaat van leren door tedoen in de praktijkLearn, share borrow solutions. Collaboration and the human factor is key. “Better” doing learning together. Focus op kwaliteit en groepseffort. Samen met medestudenten dingen doen. Samen opdrachten maken, en samen dingen oplossen.------------------------------------------ The possibilitiesforinnovation in education will focus on local markets More clever combinationsandblending of IT technologyinnovationswithanalog elements. ------------------------------------------Je volgtopleidingwaar je bent en nietwaar die gegevenwordt.
  • Other principles:Long-lasting, useful, affordable-----------------putting “soul” into learning content, Emotionally engage the learnerPutting creativity into learning content-----------------------------Moving forward into the student centric system that can be personalized for different student learning needs. ----------------------------------“you have to engage people before you can teach them” (sounds familiar, doesn’t it!). In these challenging environments, a “pull” approach is necessary in order to succeed (versus the forced “push” approach used in richer nations). Education only works if it is motivating and inspiring in these situations, and the approaches being used offer many new ideas that can be leveraged in schools everywhere to improve the educational process.---------------------------------
  • How do you motivate a kid/student/trainee?how do you get him involved? How do you keep him engaged? How do you keep him interested? How do you enjoy learning?how do you get pleasure from what you do?How to improving the experience of individual learners?Educationalneed:ValuableEnjoy/funOrganicGive me the tools--------------I know what i wantWhere is it-----------CreateCollaborateOpenShare------------------------------Imagine an education system that started from questions and not from knowledge to be departed.  Or started from a game and not a lesson. Or starting from the premisse that you have to engage the people first before you can possibly teach them. Our education system you do all that stuff afterwards.
  • Then:Improvements is extremely difficult to organizeSystem misses the pointthe old model forced every student through the same expensive mold--------------------------------------------Managing the system more efficientlyCatering model (metaphor): fast food industry that standardizes. Everything is exactly what you are expecting. Idea of linearity: we have become obsessed with this linear narrative.Conformity: everything is standardizedSystem misses the pointEducation pays of in 5 yearsFormal location: classroom------------------------One of the principles of adult learning is that you should learn something when you have a reason to learn it.---------------------------------------Moving forward into the student centric system that can be personalized for different student learning needs. Turning the content is critical in a student centric system: Content has to be intrinsically motivating, such that students are captivated and want this in the face of everything else that they could be doing. ---------------It’s about working towards a future in which every child — regardless of race or socioeconomic status — has access to the exceptional schools, highly effective teachers, and cutting edge tools - They need to succeed in college and beyond.-----------------2020--------------------Design principles:Affordability, simplicity, convenience, accessibility, capability and responsivenessTransformation principle: it is not a technology or money problem: it’s about deploying the disruptive technology in the right model. The business model and how it is used matters much more. Architecture principles: modularly approach makes customizing and personalized education affordable. ---------------------Blended learning principles- Anytime a student is learning in part through online delivery, with some element of student control over the time, the place, the path or the place. And at least in part in a supervised prick and mortar location, away from home. - Individualizing learning by replacing one-size-fits-all lectures with self-paced learning-----------------------Content principlesWe have to get out of this one size fits all mentality.Standardized content is boring, flat, sequential and a lot of multiple choice--------------------------------Technology principlesIt is not about the technology! Schools saying, we have the smart boards, we have the iPads, it is not the point! It’s the model in which it is used. Enter the design process asking what you want to get out of it. Define the vision, define what is the success, define what you want to see as outcome. And then work backwards. Make technology the slave to your strategy. Not the other way around.

  • Source: European Commission, The Future of Learning - Preparing for change, (2011)--------------------------------------------------------Achievement can be integrated with the delivery of content in ways that help students feel successful while they learn, every day. Often this comes in the form of reviews or examinations that are built into the software, which require students to demonstrate mastery before they can move to the next body of material. Feedback can be delivered frequently and in bite-sized pieces, as necessary, to help each student feel successful.---------------------------------We have to recognise that the heart of educational improvement is improving the experience of individual learners and treating each school individually and not as a mass.----------------------------------Governments think that it is about managing the system more efficiently, rather than improving the quality of learning-------------------------------
  • Remember what the job of education is? -----------------------------------------------Students then: Lack of interest, not involved, not engaged --------------------------------------Future learning teachers:They are relational: They develop student-to-student, student-to-educator, and student-to-parent relationships. They are hopeful: They inspire students with energy and enthusiasm for the future. They are insightful: They see each student as an individual and get to know his or her unique identity and nature.----------------------------------------The teachers are going to be fountains of knowledge, experience, mentorship, humanity, instead of fountains of a scripted lecture.------------------------Improving the experience of individual learners:- student have “different learning needs” at different times. - We learn things at different passes. - we have different aptitude and working memory capacity - we all bring into a learning experience, different amounts of knowledge, different levels of experience.------------------------Better learning checklist:get through to people, make demands of them, give them an opportunity to demonstrate what they can do and connect to their talent. ------------------------------------------------2020----------------------Using focused coaching by the teacher to address students' individual needs --------------------Teachers are not going to be replaced. But disruptive innovations will change the job that teachers do. They will have multiple jobs: like mentors, motivators, that guy on the side, their may be content experts, some may act as case workers, and more teachers getting to work in team teaching models,
  • -----------------------Students choose more and more to live a nomad style of life: continuous learning everywhere syncs with their nomad activitiesPeople are emotionally engaged when learning. Putting soul into learning content matters -----------------------------People connect to their (multiple) talents Putting creativityintolearning contentWantourcreativityto flowEmotionallyengage the learnerPutting “soul” intolearning content mattersDifferent learningneedsandRethinking student motivation:Learning experience is playful and exploration oriented, that puts peoples minds into a relaxed state.

  • THEN:Industrial model of education Memorizing factsSubmissiveForced push approachStarts/departs from knowledgeStarts/departs from lessonFirst teach, then engage.Learning by listening in a classroomCompulsoryOne-size fits-all lecturesReading materials----------------------------Improvements is extremely difficult to organizeSystem misses the point  creates lack of interestIndustrial model (metaphor), a manufacturing model, which is based on linearity and conformity and batching people.--------------------------Improving the experience of individual learners by creating an interactive, personalized education system.---------------------------------------------Creating collaborative learning environments with students solving problems together and tutoring one another------------------------------------------------------2020- Half of the universities are gone. Collapsed, merged or acquired- Hybrid: in 2020 basically every students takes several hybrid online courses. - Receive real-time interactive feedback. Real-time feedback is important if the student can actually do something about it. - Providing guidance to the teacher through real-time metrics and reporting on student Competency based learning systems flips classroom. Taking a mastery-based approach to learning critical knowledge and skills (every student takes as long as he/she needs to learn each concept fully) - students progress when they achieved mastery of the content. : providing personalized tutorials. (custom learning)
  • Agricultural: Organic process. All you can do, like a farmerHybrid:Teleconferencing, online universities and distance learning will lead to hybrid campusesCollaboration: Most great learning happens in groups, that collaboration is the stuff of growth. with students solving problems together and tutoring one another. -------------------------------------We have to think differently about human capacity. We have to get over this old conception of academic, non-academic, abstract, theoretical, vocational and see it for what it is, a myth.-----------------------------------Recognize that most great learning happens in groups, that collaboration is the stuff of growth. If we atomize people and separate them and judge them separately we form a kind of disjunction between them and their natural learning environment. It is crucially about the culture of our institutions, the habits of institution and the habitats they occupy.-----------------------most people will get at least some of their education in massive open online courses; a fairly large percentage will get all of their education in MOOCs; only a select few are likely to be able to afford to experience a fully campus-based, face-to-face education," ------------------------------------------------------Direct feedback makes them eager, they get direct response of their actions. Provides in quicker learning.
  • Purpose:One of the principles of adult learning is that you should learn something when you have a reason to learn it.
  • Education and learning will become as much fun as video games. And we call it full body learning---------------------Knowledge retained
