  • 6. Recap on previous meeting • Identified a range of areas where copyright literacy was relevant • Agreed some principles when updating the copyright policy • Agreed the value in having a strategic approach to copyright literacy

Activities affected by copyright • Digitisation of archival material (rights clearance) • Use of materials in teaching • Use of social media and online platforms • Quotation, remix and reuse • Lecture recording and public performance • Taking/sourcing photographs and consent of subjects • Creation of educational resources and research outputs (text, tools, datasets, software etc.) • Ensuring accessibility

Observed / Desired Behaviours • Infringing self-scans – we want to encourage people to use the CLA scanning service • Use of material with no attribution – we want to raise awarenes. • Not using already provided material – promote use of collections • Self-censorship – increase confidence • Accessibility issues – move to accessibility by design • Lack of online exhibitions – apply rights clearance best practice

Acting lawfully but acknowledging the need to challenge assumptions? To take full advantage of the provisions in UK copyright law? Balancing copyright compliance with freedom of speech and academic freedom? Avoid copyright being a barrier, particularly around misunderstandings?
