Deep Learning explained in 90 seconds. Plus…

  1. 1. DEEP LEARNING is…
  2. 2. …a marketing term (of course). But not a bad one so long as you know that…
  3. 3. …“deep” doesn’t mean “profound” and “learning” doesn’t mean there’s someone who learns
  4. 4. “Deep” means “our calculation network has lots of layers” [lots: ≥ 3 or 4] “Learning” means “given more data, our algorithm will update (hopefully, improve) its calculations”
  5. 5. Machine Learning is like the “fitting a line through dots” that you did in school maths or science
  6. 6. …but when you get more data, you fit a better line…
  7. 7. … and then you learn how to fit lines through ever more complicated sets of dots …
  8. 8. Graph of, “Where does Wally hide most?” http://blog.wolfram.com/2015/02/27/find-waldo-faster/
  9. 9. … and in thousands of dimensions, not just two…
  10. 10. …until one day you can “fit a line” through sets of dots as complex as a set of photographs…
  11. 11. …and find you’ve fit a face!
  12. 12. “deepness” is about layers of “hierarchical feature learning”: 1. Learn to see dark/light contrasts & edges, given only pixels 2. Then, see simple shapes given only (1) 3. Then more complex shapes made out of (2) 4. …continue for X layers —this is the deep bit— … 5. Until—hey presto!—you can see faces layer 1… …etc… layer 2…
  13. 13. The one-afternoon start: (if you can read some maths & python) neuralnetworksanddeeplearning.com /chap1.html The 3 month start: coursera.org /learn/machine-learning/ How can I get started?
  14. 14. Oh, by the way…
  15. 15. Unbiased Algorithms?
  16. 16. I’m sorry Davina, I’m afraid I can’t do that…
  17. 17. You see, I can only learn from the faces of the gender and skin colour I was shown…
  18. 18. @chrisfcarroll www.cafe-encounter.netYou saw? Good. Goodbye.
