2. Introduction
In this unit, we were meant to learn a new skill. I chose to learn read
Hindi. I wanted to learn it because it is my native language, and I can
speak it fluently. However, my reading is not good, and I only know the
basics. I want to learn my native language because it can benefit me
when I go to India and it will bring me closer to my culture too.
4. My first step in this unit was to choose a complex text which I would
read at the start of the unit and the end. The purpose of this is to
show how much I’ve improved over the course of this month. On
January 26, I read as much of the text as I could in 1 minute 30
seconds and skipped over the words that I wasn’t able to read. I will
not read that specific text again to avoid memorizing the words and
making it too easy for me later on.
6. Alphabets

After recording, I realized that I had forgotten some of the letters in the alphabet so I listened to
some videos teaching them and praticed pronouncing the letters.
7. Research
Learning plan
Planning
I created a timeline using the information I
gained from my research. I implemented the
steps that I thought were most beneficial and
relevant to my learning and created deadlines
per week. This helped me be more successful
as I did not waste time and learned properly.
In this week, I decided I wanted a clear learning
plan to follow throughout this project. This would
lead less confusion and less procrastination. To to
this, I first researched the best ways to learn to
read a new language.

Understanding grammar rules allows me to have
a greater understanding of the text and gives me
more context clues. It also allows me to have
more prosody while reading.
12. Reading Short Story 1
This short story is from a grade 5 Hindi textbook about Gandhi and his past.
I asked my parents to rate its difficulty level as they both know Hindi
fluently. After I read the text, I got my parents to rate how well I read the
text. It also me 6 minutes to read the entire text.

15. Basic Words
and Phrases
This week, I started out by writing all the common
words I saw in all the text I read. I also researched
some phrases that were most common. This research
helped me memorize all the small words and be able
to recognize them on sight. For example, in English
words like what and where are common words that
people usually can recognize on sight.

16. Short story 1 (try 2)
I reread the same short story as week 2 and there have been many improvements
since then.
● I read the text in only 2 minutes
● My parents both gave me a higher rating
● I read more words correctly
I believe the increase in reading speed is due to my lesson on basic words and
phrases because I did not need to waste time sounding out each and every word
which decreased the amount of time it took to read the text. Also, since I had already
read the story, I was able to read more words correctly. Moreover, I answered
comprehension questions on this text which were all correct.
17. Informative Text
Next, I read an informative text which was harder in difficultly because of long words and many
matras. This caused me to struggled but I was still able to read almost every word correctly
which is my best time yet. My parents rated the text’s difficulty a 6/10 and gave my reading a
6.5/10. I also answered comprehension on the text and got all of the questions correct.

21. Newspaper Text
This week I read a newspaper text about Twitter’s offices closing down in India.
This text was easy to read because the language was simpler and many of the
words were English words written in Hindi. My parents rated the text 6/10 in
difficulty and rated my reading 7.5/10.
