Defining Diversity
3
What is Diversity?
The practice or quality of including or involving
people from a range of different social and
ethnic backgrounds and of different genders,
sexual orientations.
Diversity in the Workplace
What is workplace diversity?
Diversity in the workplace is the mix. It’s the
presence of employees who all bring unique
identities—that represent an intersection of
ethnicities, races, physical traits, mental
traits, life experiences, and much more.

Internal
This refers to any trait
or characteristic that a
person is born with.
These might include
sex, race, ethnicity,
gender, sexual
orientation, nationality,
or physical ability.
Diversity in the Workplace Infographics
diversity includes any attribute, experience, or circumstance that
helps to define a person’s identity — but is not something that they
were born with. Examples include education, marital status, religion,
appearance, or location. These characteristics are often influenced
by others and may change over time. They’re considered external
since they can be consciously changed.
External
Diversity in the Workplace Infographics
Differences in job function, work experience, seniority, department, or
management level are referred to as organizational diversity. Often,
entire departments or levels of a company can be homogeneous which
means that everyone looks the same, comes from the same background,
or has the same experience.
Organizational

World view
Finally, worldview diversity surrounds a broad range of beliefs, political
affiliations, culture, and travel experiences. Our worldview, or our perspectives,
contributes to an innovative, inclusive work environment and helps to learn more
about each other

Examples of Diversity in the Workplace
When it comes to diversity and inclusion,
there are hundreds of different situations that
could appropriately qualify as examples of
types of diversity in the workplace. Let’s go
with three of the ones that you may have
experienced.Venus has a beautiful name and
is the second planet from the Sun. It’s
terribly hot, even hotter than Mercury, and its
atmosphere is extremely poisonous
Diversity in the Workplace Infographics
An organizational team is made up of people from
different cultures. For multinational companies, this
team could consist of organizational members from
Japan, the United States, India, Russia, Egypt, and
South Africa—all working together to bring their
unique world views, skills, and cultural experiences
together to solve problems and increase
productivity. This example is not limited to the call
centers only. An organization that does business in
one country could make up a diverse team just by
putting together people from different internal
regions or different ethnicities within the country.

Seeking out new hires in a different
location is a part of workplace diversity.
In an environment where technology
has enabled virtual communication and
collaboration like never before, adding
in diversity through employees in
different locations is easier than ever.
Many companies can bring in the
valuable new ideas and experiences
that people from other locations offer
without the physical barriers of
commuting that existed in a pre-digital
working environment.

Putting together a team with generational or age differences
symbolizes workplace diversity. Many organizations go one of
two ways when it comes to their age or generational makeup.
03
Diversity in the Workplace Infographics
A person’s gender is how
they identify internally and
how they express this
externally. People may use
clothing, appearances, and
behaviors to express the
gender that they identify
with.
Gender
Diversity in the Workplace Infographics
A person’s sex is typically based on certain
biological factors, such as their reproductive
organs, genes, and hormones.
Like gender, sex is not binary. A person may
have the genes that people may associate
with being male or female, but their
reproductive organs, genitals, or both may
look different.

Gender diversity
In simple words, gender
diversity is the equal or fair
representation of people
belonging to different genders
within an organization. Having
said that, gender diversity in the
workplace is not merely about
having a diverse mix of genders. It
is also about how inclusive they
feel after they get hired.
