Kasern (1582 m) (in the municipality of Prettau) is not only the most northern town in South Tyrol, but also of Italy. Kasern is located at the bottom of the Ahrntal Valley at the foot of the famous Peak of Italy (2913 m). From Kasern an easy hiking trail leads to the Holy Spirit. The Church of the Holy Spirit is the oldest church in the whole Valley and was probably built for the miners who worked in the mine of Prettau for the extraction of copper. The Church of the Holy Spirit , dating from the fifteenth century (in German Talschluss Ahrntal mit Heiliggeistkapelle) is a small and isolated chapel located in Kasern, to which many legends are linked. The Church of the Holy Spirit , however, is mainly known for the crucifix pierced by bullet holes. According to legend, a shooter en route for a shooting competition decided to try once again its precision, piercing the cross three times. He won the competition and returned with a bull, who passing from the cross became enraged and killed the shooter. Even today this church is a popular pilgrimage site and absolutely deserves to be visited.
