The role of TfL • Keeping London moving and working and making life in London better • Delivering a transport system that secures London’s position as a world-leading city and the engine of the UK economy • Ensuring that those who live and work in or visit London can access all the capital has to offer in terms of jobs, leisure, health and education • Helping to develop and build the city around us, supporting jobs and growth

  5. 5. • The Stuart Ross BAME internship was set up in 2006 to address underrepresentation in our own press office and in the industry, with the first interns starting in January 2007. • TfL was representative of London as a whole (one third BAME) • Just 8 per cent of the press office was BAME in 2006 • 6 month pilot – now expanded to 11 month annual programme taking 2 interns per year Stuart Ross BAME Internship – A History

Why our internship is different? • We genuinely recognise the importance of diversity – it isn’t a tick box exercise. • Motivation is key. • We don’t have a typical candidate. • Assessment Centres • Integral part of the team working on key PR issues and campaigns. • We try to tailor the scheme to interns’ interests and ambitions so they can develop as individuals. • Bursary paid at the London Living wage with TfL’s benefits.
  7. 7. • 26 interns have been through the scheme (16 women, 10 men). • 9 interns secured jobs at TfL following their internship, 8 of these were in the press office • Until recently one third of the press office was BAME • Now expanded to other TfL Communications departments Our success
