Road less traveled: Postponing your career for postgraduate work

  1. 1. The Road Less Traveled… Postponing your Career for Postgraduate Work Presented by Brian Deutsch
  2. 2. It Started out Much the Same…l Undergraduate work at Cooper Unionl Graduated May of 2003 l I’m graduating?! What do I do now?
  3. 3. Work or More School?l It’s an important choice that deserves your time and attentionl The two options are very different.l I tried to talk to as many people as possible – Students, professors, advisors, professionals
  4. 4. …And I Chose Graduate Schooll I started my quest for a Masters Degree in 2004 at Cooper Union – But it actually began during the summer of 2002l There are many options for post-graduate studies, and not all are in engineeringl Decision making process should begin Junior year or even Sophomore year – Even if it is as a secondary plan – As usual, waiting until the last minute is not good
  5. 5. Advantages of Graduate Schooll Opportunity to diversify – Does NOT mean you must become more focused in one area – Conduct research in one area, take courses in anotherl You may find it more difficult to go back to school after working
  6. 6. Why Get Another Degree?l More doors will be open, not fewer – With a masters, you need fewer years of pertinent experience for many job postingsl Starting salary will likely be higherl Another year to live it up as a college student instead of entering the real world!
  7. 7. But if You are Tired of Schooll Work is a very strong optionl There are two main reasons for working right out of school – Experience – $$$$$l Sometimes, work will pay for your school!l Experience should not be overlooked – Neither should money
  8. 8. The Final Decisionl Unfortunately, there is no general rulel Everyone’s situation is different and each person needs to choose accordinglyl Luckily, there is no wrong answer.l Good Luck!
