  • At Gale, we truly believe that by transforming learning we can transform lives. We also believe that by providing high-quality, authoritative, current digital content we can engage students and teachers in new and different ways and ultimately increase both student achievement and teacher effectiveness.
  • We are…- Reimagining what instruction and learning looks like- Building Products that provide a 21st Century Experience- Doing research to look at our impact on Student Achievement and Engagement- And doing it all with 21st Century Budgets in mind
  • From a product perspective, this is our focus. Gale is a board member of P21 and we are heavily involved in this work. For the last number of years, we have really built our products based on this framework. We feel that we are unique in how we can support and impact 21st Century education because we have both rigorous, authoritative content to support the 3Rs… and also a dynamic learning environment to help develop the 4Cs and the other essential skills.
  • I know that a lot of you on the phone have resources from us. Many of you have been using them for years and you know about the quality of our content… both that we publish and that we aggragate. This will always be a core focus for us.
  • With all the shifts and changes that are happening, this content is more important than ever. And you all have been supporting these areas, better than anyone else, for years. Now we want to support you better, make these connections more obvious and help all of you to make your libraries an even more essential part of your school or district. That said, it’s also no longer just about content… it’s also technology. And we realize that the content is only as good as the technology that drives it. We need to meet a diverse group of students that have diverse needs. Because of that, we continue to incorporate tools into our resources that accommodate those varying needs. As an example, all of the content in Gale resources can be read to the student, which can support struggling readers. Additionally, the content can also be translated into 11 different languages to support ELL students and bilingual programs. With our combination of high-quality content and technology tools we truly are meeting the needs of today’s 21st Century learners.
  • And it’s great that we are saying this, and doing all of these things… but we want to know if it matters? Can this type of content and these tools really impact teaching and learning? The answer is yes. To me this case study, which I am going to talk about for just a few minutes, is all about library advocacy. And I think it’s really important. We recently concluded a two-year study looking at the impact of digital resources on teaching and learning. The purpose was to evaluate how teachers can use digital content to develop students’ 21st century skills, and the effects of technology on student engagement and performance.McKinley Technology High School is a Science, Technology, Engineering, andMath magnet school within the District of Columbia Public School System, offering a rich program specifically designed to prepare students for thechallenges of anever-changing global market689 Students93% African American54% Free and Reduced Lunch
  • Here’s what we found. Using Gale resources…
  • Both students and teachers recognize the value of using Gale resources to improve student learning. While teachers’ perceptions of student impact were strong, it is interesting that the students’ own value propositions were even stronger. While it is common for educators to focus on the use of technology to increase student engagement, it is instructive that the students actually place a higher value on the role of technology (in this case, the Gale resources) in improving their skills and outcomes, and providing themselves with opportunities to become learners who are more self-reliant with enhanced research skills.
  • The goal of the ECR project is to assess student mastery of content, proficiency in literacy, and students’ ability to connect content to relevant, applicable life situations. In addition to the teachers’ qualitative assessments of their students’ enhanced performance after using the Gale resources, and the students’ self-assessments of the effect of the resources on their learning environment, quantitative student achievement data was also examined to gain greater insights into the impact of the pilot. One of those measures examined was the results from McKinley Tech’s Extended Constructed Response (ECR)project assessments.Assessment results increased13% for science; 17% for world historyAnimation on here will probably be the percentages dissolving in, or something along those lines.
  • So I want to now transition to what you all actually came here for… to hear about CLiC & In Context. Thank you for allowing me to share some background on the work we’ve been doing. Let me now give you some quick background on CLiC before Lemma takes you into the actual product and shows you what it looks like.
  • Overlay or instructional path to our robust and rigorous digital content
  • 6 National or “pre-built” courses
  • In addition to the 6 subjects based on the National Curriculum Framework for Science and Social Studies, we have also worked with numerous districts to create custom “courses” that are aligned to their specific course curriculum.
  • 48% custom13% alignment39% national
  • And we are doing all of this in a way that meets 21st Century Budgets. Because we understand that this only works if we can create long lasting partnerships with leaders like you.
  • This is why it matters. I know all of you are interested in increasing the usage of your library resources. That’s what CLiC does. The usage increase is staggering in the schools/districts that have adopted CLiC. But this really shouldn’t be too surprising. This is what happens when these resources become part of daily instruction.
