  14. 14. Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke.org.uk Top Tips When Applying 1. Talk, talk, talk…and collaborate Research design service/CTU, current award holders, supervisor(s), colleagues, methodology experts, mentors, collaborators, finance office, statistician 2. PPI: ensure it’s not an after-thought, must be meaningful, feasible and include follow-up 3. Clear rationale: research question; hypothesis; aims; methodological plan to answer key questions; keep it focused 4. Lay summary: The what, where, when, why and how: keep it short and don’t over sell it 5. Get the numbers right: power calculations, recruitment plan, financial costs and projections
  15. 15. Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke.org.uk Common Pitfalls • Sample size not sufficiently powered • Recruitment criteria too narrow • Lack of focus and/or articulation of outcomes • Lack of evidence/poor hypothesis • No statistical or research design support • Too ambitious – cost and timescale under-estimated • Not ambitious enough – pedestrian, written a consumables wish-list and a pilot project • No health economics or other necessary specialist • One applicant on grant or only one supervisor
  16. 16. Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke.org.uk Finally…Your Fellowship or Lectureship Interview Is About YOU!!! • NIHR’s Fellowship PPPTS: Person, Project, Place, Training, Supervision • SA Fellowships score 40% for the 1st P and 15% each for the rest! • Remember to sell yourself as well as your project Great Candidate + Mid-Average Project = Highly Fundable Great Project + Mid-Average Candidate = Less Fundable Funders want to support the research leaders of the future – only you can convince the panel you are right for this – ownership of the project is REALLY important
