Harvard Business Review, U.S. employees want access to natural light more than on-site cafeterias, fitness
centers, or on-site childcare.
Natural light is also a major selling point in real estate. Sources of natural light, like floor-to-ceiling glass
walls or windows, skylight roofing, or sun rooms reduce the need for artificial, electric light inside the home
during the day. Apart from this, living in a house with many sources of natural light can bring many physical
and mental health benefits.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
About 5 percent of the U.S. population get SAD during the winter months. Seasonal Affect Disorder or SAD is
a type of depression related to seasonal changes. The Mayo Clinic suggests that most SAD symptoms start
during the fall, when the days get shorter and the nights get longer, and continue into the winter months,
making a person suffering from it moody.
The circadian rhythm or a person’s biological clock gets disrupted when there’s a decrease in sunlight, causing
SAD. Apart from this, the disruption also affects people’s sleeping patterns, which exacerbates SAD sufferers’
emotional states. A small 2014 study revealed that better exposure to natural light equates to better sleep.
So, though winter days tend to bring gray sky, access to natural light is still better than being cooped up in a
dark or artificially-lit room.
3. The Sunshine Vitamin
Vitamin D is vital in the absorption of calcium and the promotion of bone growth. Its deficiency causes fragile
bones in children, and in adults, osteoporosis. People living in countries farther from the equator, like parts
of the U.S., often have more problems regarding Vitamin D deficiency. It’s because the sun is the best natural
source of Vitamin D.
With skin exposure to sufficient sunlight, though, Vitamin D deficiency problems can be avoided. Even if the
sunlight filters in through the window, people can still get the Vitamin D they need.
With mental and physical health at stake, it’s important to find ways to let the sunshine in at home.
