Yousuf KarshYousuf Karsh was born in December 23, 1908 and died July 13, 2002. he was anArmenian-Canadian photographer, and one of the most famous and accomplished portraitphotographers of all time.Karsh was born in Mardin, a city in the eastern Ottoman Empire (present Turkey). Whenhe was 16 his parents sent Yousuf to live with his uncle George Nakash, a photographerin Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.Yousuf Karsh photographed in black and white, most of his work was of famous men andwomen in front of plain backgrounds.Composition – With nearly all of Yousuf Karsh’s images he has the subject centre or off toone side with them facing the camera. The background of his images is usually plain orsomething that connects to the subject.
Choose an image…. Describe itIn this photograph you can see and man with a hat on, the photo is in black and whiteand quite a close up shot. This photograph being in black and white works well because of the shadow over themans eyes. His facial expression suggests that he is a deep shaded sort of man so theshadowing fits in well.I am not sure when this photograph was taken or where as not much information wasgiven when I searched for it.
This photograph is of actress, Joan Crawford. She is positioned facing thecamera slightly but is not facing it head on. The background is plain, I think thismakes you look more at the subject which is obviously the kind of thing thatYousuf Karsh would have wanted as he is photographing famous people.
