4. 4. Setting
5. 5. Timeline
Kate is diagnosed with cancer at age two and her mom Sara wants to do everything she can to save her so the doctor advices them to try to make a perfect donor match for Kate because neither her brother or them are match for her. So they have Anna with in vitro fertilization and they make sure she is a match for her sister. Anna is born and she goes through a lot of procedures through all her life .
When Kate turns 15 she goes into renal failure and she needs Anna to give her a kidney, their mom Sara pushes Anna to give a kidney to her sisters even if she doesn’t want to.
6. 6. Kate asks Sara not to give her a kidney because she wants to die and stop suffering.
Sara looks for a very famous lawyer called Campbell who agrees to help her so she can get an emancipation to her body and she can refuse to give her sister a kidney, also she realizes all the things that her mother has taken away from her to save her sister.
Her overprotective mother, leads an obsessive campaign to keep Kate alive, and is indignant at Anna's decision.
Kate goes to the hospital prom with her boyfriend Taylor and after that she is upset because he hasn’t called her but she later find out he already died because he had cancer to.
Kate is getting worse and she wants to go to the beach and although the doctor says it’s not good for her and her mother doesn’t want to let her go, her father takes her and they spend the day at the beach
7. 7. Anna and Kate's older brother, Jesse reveal that Anna's actions are actually under Kate's instruction, their mother Sara is indignant at this discovery, but finally realizes that Kate had been trying to tell her that she was done and she didn’t want Anna’s kidney.
Before the case is decided, Kate dies while sleeping at the hospital with her mother by her side. After Kate's death, Campbell brings the court decision: Anna won the case. The family moves on with their lives, but every year on Kate's birthday they go to Montana, which was her "most favorite place in the world." At the end, Anna says that their relationship continues because she will see Kate again in heaven some day.
8. 8. Comment
I think this movie has many different points of view of something very important, and also can be understood in very different ways depending on who is watching.
For me it was very sad but also very inspiring, the mom scarifying everything for her daughter demonstrates that the love of a mom is endless, the way Kate understood her destiny, she didn’t give up but she loved her sister so she couldn’t make her do that, she accepted that she was going to die and she was so strong going through that pain.
I think there are many things that we can learn with this movie but for me one of the most important is to fight for what we believe in and everything happens for a reason.
