Joseph Albers (1934), professor and former Bauhaus student, reinforces
the importance of a relational approach to materials (Werklehre – that is,
design with materiais) as fundamental to all design investigations.
In his view, engagement with materials might help people learn from
personal experience (instead of being taught by other’s experiences),
allowing autonomous investigations.

ORGANIC GEMS FROM THE AMAZON
If performed in a sustainable manner, the production chain of
Amazonian organic gems used in fashion accessories can:
• Avoid harming the environment ;
• Minimize the use of child labor ;
• Improve the quality of life and social conditions of the
collector / producer;
• Improve the quality of the final product and maximize profit;
• Use the fashion design as a strategic element for market
positioning.
ICTIOCOURO FOR SUSTAINABLE FASHION
The enlargement of the fish sector in halieutic communities, aimed at producing
the Ictiocouro*, can:
- Mitigate the harmful effects caused by the disposal of organic waste (fish
skin) deposited in riverbeds and domestic ports;
- Mitigate harmful effects on society and the unemployment of young female;
- Add value to hand gender work;
- Improve the quality of life and social conditions of fishermen;
- Transform the byproduct, otherwise discarded, into higher value added
products in the fisheries production chain;
- Improve the quality of the final product and maximize profit ;
- Use the fashion design as a strategic element for market positioning
* Ictiocouro - name created by the researcher to name the sustainable fish
leather, generated in Halieutiques extractive communities
