  1. 1. Propaganda Persuasive Devices SPI 0701.5.4 Identify examples of persuasive devices (i.e., bandwagon, loaded terms, testimonial, name-calling, plain folks).

Objectives <ul><li>By the end of class you should be able to identify examples of propaganda, explain their use, and learn how to create your own. </li></ul><ul><li>Assignment: </li></ul><ul><li>Imagine you are a member of the Logan family. Using PowerPoint and the internet Create your own ad campaign persuading people in the community to boycott the Wallace store. </li></ul>

Where do we see propaganda? <ul><li>Newspapers and books </li></ul><ul><li>Magazines </li></ul><ul><li>Internet </li></ul><ul><li>Clothing </li></ul><ul><li>Billboards </li></ul><ul><li>Bumper stickers </li></ul><ul><li>TV </li></ul><ul><li>Radio </li></ul><ul><li>Signs </li></ul><ul><li>Products </li></ul><ul><li>Cartoons (political) </li></ul>

Propaganda <ul><li>Specific message presentation that is directly aimed at influencing the opinion or behavior of the viewer </li></ul><ul><li>The power to persuade. </li></ul><ul><li>Propaganda may also be referred to as persuasive devices. </li></ul><ul><li>The message does not have to include false information to be considered propaganda. </li></ul>

Bandwagon <ul><li>Author tries to get you to believe something or use a product by telling you that everyone else is doing it, so you should too. </li></ul><ul><li>Example: Get your pair of Jordan shoes </li></ul><ul><ul><li> before they're all gone - every </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li> winning team is </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li> wearing them. </li></ul></ul>

Loaded Terms <ul><li>Author uses words that will appeal to your emotions. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Once the reader is feeling strongly, he or she may be more likely to agree. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Example: </li></ul><ul><li>This billboard advertisement </li></ul><ul><li>uses the word “irresistible” </li></ul><ul><li>to appeal to our emotions. </li></ul><ul><li>The visual is also very </li></ul><ul><li>appealing. </li></ul>

Testimonial <ul><li>This technique uses the words of someone who claims to actually use the product. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Often, the testimonial comes from a celebrity – if they use it and look good, why shouldn’t you! </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Example: </li></ul><ul><li>&quot;The SUBWAY® chain helped save my </li></ul><ul><li>life over and over. I can't ever repay </li></ul><ul><li>that.&quot; </li></ul>
  8. 8. Plain Folks <ul><li>When an author uses this technique they present themselves as an “Average Joe” who can relate to his followers and is trustworthy. </li></ul><ul><li>Example: </li></ul><ul><li>Like a good neighbor… </li></ul>
  9. 9. Name Calling <ul><li>This technique uses words that are negative to describe an enemy or competitor. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Especially common during political campaigns. </li></ul></ul>
  10. 10. Task <ul><li>Imagine you are a member of the Logan family. You want to place ads in the community to persuade black residents of Spokane County to boycott the Wallace Store. </li></ul><ul><li>Using PowerPoint, create an advertisement using one of the propaganda techniques we discussed and persuade community members to boycott the Wallace Store. </li></ul><ul><li>You must also include at least 1 literary device discussed last week. </li></ul>
