This webinar is aimed at rivers trusts and CaBA partnerships who may be thinking about implementing ArcGIS Online for sharing catchment plans and story maps with stakeholders. We will structure the demo around some key questions:
1. What is ArcGIS Online and why are rivers trusts and CaBA partnerships using it?
2. How can I get it, what does it cost and what skills do I need?
3. What resources are available to help me get the most out of the technology?
4. What would be our next steps?

RT Technical Support Webinar 1. ArcGIS Online and Story Maps

  1. 1. ArcGIS Online and Story Maps • First in our online technical support webinar series • We will be recording the session and making it available online bit.ly/CaBAtraining • Please mute yourself while the presentation is running – there will be several Q&A opportunities Lucy Butler, The Rivers Trust lucy@theriverstrust.org Michelle Walker, The Rivers Trust michelle@theriverstrust.org
  2. 2. ArcGIS Online and Story Maps webinar objectives: 1. What is ArcGIS Online and why are rivers trusts and CaBA partnerships using it? 2. How can I get it, what does it cost and what skills do I need? 3. What resources are available to help me get the most out of the technology? 4. What would be our next steps?
  3. 3. Why are rivers trusts and CaBA partnerships using ArcGIS Online? • Data and evidence underpins collaborative catchment management • Helps partners communicate, agree priorities, target action, and monitor outcomes • A shared evidence base builds confidence in the catchment plan
  4. 4. Why are rivers trusts and CaBA partnerships using ArcGIS Online? • Web GIS recognised as good solution for sharing between organisations • Tried various options 2010-2015 • Expensive to develop bespoke solutions • One size does not fit all • Updating information tricky for non- technical staff • Data licensing difficulties
  5. 5. Why are rivers trusts and CaBA partnerships using ArcGIS Online? Two key developments have changed the game: • Open Defra – key datasets now open and available for use online • ArcGIS Online organisation subscription free with non- profit desktop license (ca. £120 p.a.)
  6. 6. What is ArcGIS Online? • Cloud-based, collaborative web mapping platform • Use, create, and share data, maps and apps • Collect, store and publish your own spatial data and combine with other data to make visually striking maps • Quickly and easily publish maps, narrative, images and web content using one of a number of ‘story map’ templates
  7. 7. ArcGIS Online Structure 1. Datasets and layers • National CaBA layers • Government datasets • Local data 2. Maps • Overlay datasets and layers • Symbology and appearance • Labels and popups 3. Apps (aka Story Maps) • End user interface – buttons and widgets • Additional text, images, logos, videos • Nest apps within apps
  8. 8. How CaBA partners are using ArcGIS Online Story Maps • Publishing catchment plans and engaging stakeholders • Sharing information about planned projects and gathering project ideas • Making decision support tools and model outputs more accessible • Gathering and sharing survey data • Educating and engaging schools
  9. 9. How can I get ArcGIS Online and what does it cost? • Anyone can view maps but to create them you need an ArcGIS Online Organisational Subscription • Charities get this free with ArcGIS Desktop non-profit license (£102+VAT p.a.) • Register with ESRI http://www.esri.com/nonprofit • Enable your AGOL entitlement http://bit.ly/AGOLentitlement • Worth getting one license even if you use other GIS software, e.g. MapInfo or QGIS
  10. 10. What skills do I need to get the most out of ArcGIS Online? • To get the most out of AGOL you need a GIS specialist who can help publish your data and combine existing data in to maps and apps • If you don’t have GIS trained staff, there are a growing network of AGOL specialists in the rivers trust network who can help • Typical time cost would be £2- 5k depending on complexity • We are developing training resources – more technical webinars coming soon
  11. 11. What resources are available to help get the most out of the technology? DATA • National online CaBA data package for most commonly-used layers • Around 40 datasets available including; catchment boundaries, WFD status, rivers, discharge consents, pollution incidents and source apportionment, ecological, water quality and habitat surveys, river obstacles, flood risk, geology, soils, riparian shade model and more. • Filter by CaBA catchment • Symbology, labelling and ‘popup’ information pre-configured (‘plug and play’) bit.ly/CaBAonlinedata
  12. 12. What resources are available to help get the most out of the technology? TEMPLATES • Off-the-shelf ArcGIS Online story map templates storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/ • Growing selection of CaBA-specific templates • Copy and adapt CaBA templates to suit local needs • All data, graphics, text, narrative, layout, functionality available to re- use with some support theriverstrust.maps.arcgis.com
  13. 13. What resources are available to help get the most out of the technology? TRAINING AND SUPPORT • ESRI training resources • ESRI help pages • CaBA training videos and webinars • CaBA discussion forum • CaBA helpdesk
  14. 14. The Rivers Trust Mapping Portal • Online CaBA data package • Open data portal • National maps and apps • Catchment story maps • Training portal • Helpdesk • Discussion forum theriverstrust.maps.arcgis.com
