The Issue <ul><li>At University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) Care Assistant David Faulkner was experiencing difficulty in communicating with patients </li></ul><ul><li>In one example, because of a language barrier a patient became very distressed when David was trying to prepare him for an angiogram. He spent two hours trying to calm the patient, but in the end the procedure was cancelled </li></ul><ul><li>This situation represented one of many experienced by the hospital </li></ul><ul><li>Seeking a solution, UHCW approached CDS in June 2010 </li></ul>

The Requirement <ul><li>To overcome the many challenges faced by patients and hospital staff when communication barriers exist </li></ul><ul><li>To reduce the reliance on interpreters, ease frustration and confusion, increase staff efficiency and enhance the patient experience </li></ul><ul><li>To communicate basic needs more effectively </li></ul><ul><li>To reflect the issues outlined in various government reports – 6 Lives, Care for the Elderly and the recent Care Quality Commission report </li></ul>
