These slides are an artifact of the talk, not the talk itself.Technology managers should adopt more radical reasons for bringing social media into your organizations.
Bringing social media inside organizations, for conventional reasons like innovation, creativity, collaboration, alignment, and knowledge sharing, just won’t work.
In most organizations, People are constrained because they don’t have what they need to be creative, to innovate, or to contribute all that they might.I argue that real purpose of social media
– the RADICAL Reason to bring social into the organization should be to Re-wire organizations to give people what they need to contribute more fully, more generously, more sustainably. If we pursue a more radical agenda as we bring social into our organizations, we can help to change - once and for all-- the social world that we experience together at work.
These 5 social needs are nested, one inside the other.
We need to be our full, authentic selves. In social situations especially, we need to be all of ‘who we are’ -- to express the “real me, the whole me, and nothing but me”. ** When we are able to be all of ‘who we are’ -- in specific, descriptive, textured, multiple waysWe bring forward all the knowledge, insight and ability that are linked to these different parts of our selves. No part of us lies dormant, no resource lies out of reach. How can we enable identity in our organizations, using social media?We can design social design tools that give people ways to claim expertise….2. We can also design social tools that offer people ground-up opportunities to express themselves.
Voice is the ability to speak out what we think needs to be said, where it needs to be said, in our own words and in our own style. Voice also includes being heard. ** When we are able to use our voice, and contribute our unique perspectives,We can take everything we know, from everywhere we’re learned it, and contribute it to our work.
Agency is our ability to act, to make things happen, and to get things done.** When we are able to activate agency,1. our knowledge and perspectives are used.2. we take initiative.What can you do to activate agency using social media?Build systems that--solicit people’s input, that allow people to start conversations that help people take control of how they work, when and where.
Individuals need to be connected with each other. When we are able to cohere individuals into a community,we co-createWe gather together physically, emotionallyWe need to designTools that help us knit our activity together, Tools that create a sense of shared place, and Tools that help us create organization-wide conversations.
Purpose is our reason for being.** When we are able tocatalyze a sense of purpose,We commit ourselves to working harder and better. And, Our understanding of why we work is transformed.What can we do to catalyze purpose using social media? We can design systems that Build a sense of the whole organization moving in the same direction. Help us explore and evolve our understanding of our collective purposeFacilitate discussions about options for how to get there
As each successive need is met – from identity to purpose – more of each individual is freed up to contribute
. What’s different now is that .. social media itself is a radical toolset for change!
