COMENSA MCSC Implementation Project 1

 1. 1. Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
Matthew Shelley
National Vice President COMENSA
September 2011
1
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
2. 2. Mandate from COMENSA ExCo
Implement an entry standard process
Incremental and iterative steps
We have the what– the MCSC framework backed by reference to other frameworks
We now need to design the practical how to assess
And appoint who is to assess to this
September 2011
2
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
3. 3. Principles
Rigorous and Inclusive
Ability to implement quickly – start simple and grow
Iterative process that enhances previously lacking active experimentation and reflective observation
Participatory
Inclusive of variety of approaches and international standards
Collaborative
Creative
Robust
September 2011
3
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
4. 4. Aims
To create a pilot project that can be launched at the start of 2012
The most important aspect of this is to put in place a form of entry to membership that is rigorous, well tested and implemented.
The intention is absolutely not to start by creating a full accreditation/ assessment process that matches the Membership Criteria and Standards Document
We will commence a process by which coaches, supervisors, trainers, organisations etc., become involved in entry standards and these mature over time in a way that is always inclusive and rigorous and doable.
September 2011
4
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
5. 5. The What
MCSC Framework Approved 2010
South African Qualifications Authority requires some interaction with international bodies
Liaise with other bodies working in the coaching standards space
Institute of Management Consultants
SA Board of People Practices
Society of Industrial Psychologists SA
Institute of Personnel Management
And others…..
September 2011
5
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
6. 6. The How
What do we measure?
Some suggestions
Portfolio of trainings, coaching experience, supervision and other evidence
Test of competence based on live session
Test of espoused model against questionnaire to selected clients facilitated by your supervisor
Training School submits in house process for approval
Must be inclusive – i.e. Council for Higher Education AND other routes
All options come with a pass with development plan or simply a development plan with the option to reapply
September 2011
6
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
7. 7. The Who
Who is qualified to assess coaches?
Who confers qualifications?
Does COMENSA manage this process itself?
Or do we partner with other bodies?
Capacity in SA?
ICF in SA means that there is a pool of people who have been assessing coach competence already
SA University and other training schools have been assessing coaches as part of their programmes
More experienced coaches can be invited to a community of practice of assessors and moderators
Supervisors can play a role but how do we qualify supervisors?
September 2011
7
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
8. 8. The Logic of a simple approach
If we start with a few base criteria we will have the opportunity to develop and test the process by which people are assessed
It will also allow us to examine and develop policies on who we should appoint to make the assessments
September 2011
8
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
9. 9. We have come further than you may think
September 2011
9
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
14. 14. What’s missing?
Implemented Entry Standards
Agreement on standard
Polices and Procedures that gives ethics
code and complaints system more
teeth in context of SA law
CPD Support and systems
Accreditation of suppliers
Robust database to match
professional recording needs
September 2011
12
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
15. 15. Some Thoughts on Coach Development
Highlights the balance we have to strike
September 2011
13
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
16. 16. Hawkins and Smith on Coach Development
“There has been a growth in mapping core
competencies….to assess…for..qualifications..
that only attest to the ability to memorize
and understand theory and do not examine
the ability to use skills”
September 2011
14
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
17. 17. And paradoxically…?
“If Continuing professional development is mainly
focused on developing skills and techniques, then
we become more and more transactional and lose
the human quality and transformational aspects
that are the ground of our work”
September 2011
15
COMENSA Membership Standards and Criteria Implementation Project
