PURPOSE: To inspire our church family to live dutiful, diligent lives, rooted in great
purpose.
I. The Importance of Purpose
Purpose: The reason for which something is done
Duty: A moral or legal obligation; a responsibility
Diligent: Assiduous, industrious, conscientious, thorough; not idle, not negligent, not lazy
o Purpose is the “why” to our existence. Who I am, or my identity, is found in discovering the purpose
of my life.
o My actions and words are determined according to my purpose.
II. Where Do You Believe That Your Purpose Comes From?
Whether we believe it or not, all of us live from one of two places. We either:
A. Live from our own defined purpose
OR
B. Live from the purpose that we have sought and received from God
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails (Prov. 19:21)
But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and
that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6, KJV)
III. What Does Life WITHOUT Purpose Look Like?
For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (James 3:16)
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the
Father, but is from the world. (1 John 2:16)
o Without purpose, life will always feel chaotic and unorganized. We keep ourselves busy, but never
feel as though we accomplish much.
o Anything and everything is allowed into our lives.
o Our flesh and eyes remain unsatisfied, so we try to keep up and chase after more.
Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again (John 4:13)
2. IV. What is OUR Purpose?
ONE THING I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF
THE LORD ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE, TO GAZE UPON THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD and
to MEDITATE IN HIS TEMPLE. (Psalm 27:4)
My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the Living God.
(Psalm 84:2)
o Gazing upon the beauty of the Lord satisfies the lust of the flesh.
o Why would we find rest in anything other than the presence of God? Jesus is the only resting
place that we were designed for and the only One that will satisfy.
IV. How Do I Find MY Purpose?
1. Begin living, by faith, from the belief that you originated with God.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand,
that we should walk in them. (Eph. 2:10)
o God created you with purpose. He is the only one who can truly tell you what your purpose is,
through intimacy with Him. He provided tools to accomplish this: Prayer, Worship, Studying His
Word with diligence. It’s His Word that reveals our purpose.
o Thoroughly seeking Him is faith in action. It displays that we have received His Word and that we
delight in Him.
Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will grant you the desires of your heart. (Ps. 37:4)
2. Activate your faith by putting to work what you believe.
FOR AS THE BODY WITHOUT THE SPIRIT IS DEAD, SO FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS
DEAD ALSO. (James 2:14-26)
o Purpose has to be ignited by faith. If our purpose lies in the truth through which God commands us,
then our actions must line up with what we say we believe. Without that, faith is dead, and becomes
hypocritical.
o God speaks to everyone, but few who receive His Word live their lives according to what He says.
Many are called (invited), few are chosen. (Mt. 22:14)
o Why? Because we have to be willing to lay down our lives to follow Him.
If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow Me.
(Mt. 16:24)
