Many projects for reducing carbon emissions through avoided deforestation and forest degradation and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+) propose uniform incentives for each type of actor target by the project (e.g. small farmers). However, in this presentation, we suggest that the large heterogeneity within groups of seemingly-similar actors requires intervention approaches that are mindful of these differences. We present a preliminary typology of smallholders participants of an incipient REDD+ project in the eastern Brazilian Amazon and analyze if planned REDD+ incentive mechanisms seem well-aligned with the characteristics of the different groups.
