Best Practices on Indonesia's Peatland Management: Lesson Learnt, Opportunities & Challenges

  1. 1. BEST PRACTICES ON INDONESIA’S PEATLAND MANAGEMENT : LESSON LEARNT, OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES IMAN SANTOSO Jakarta, 30 October 2018
  2. 2. MISSION Managing water level to keep optimal soil moisture GOALS 1. Controlling subsidence; 2. Optimizing tree growth; 3. Controlling GHG emission; 4. Avoiding wild fire MAIN EFFORTS: 1. Land and water management; 2. Infrastructures and equipment; 3. Land Zoning; 4. Community based protection and fire early warning system program (Desa Bebas Api and Desa Makmur Peduli Api etc); PEATLAND MANAGEMENT FOR TIMBER PLANTATION
  3. 3. Planning - Topography and water level survey - Peat depth survey - Spatial planning - Canal design - Water zonation - Define water balance
  4. 4. Construction of Infrastructures -Canals & roads -Dam and water gate/partition -Water Outlet and sediment dam
  5. 5. Monitoring and controlling - Rain and peat water level - Canal water level - Volume and flow of water - Peat character - Subsidence
  6. 6. Lesson Learnt Proper utilization: • Productive land for specific species and uses; except peat dome • Water management is a key success; • Avoiding wild fire and control emission; • Community involvement is a must. Chalenges: • High investment; • Technology advancement; • Conservation and development debate; • Competing land uses with other land-based development
  7. 7. Opportunities • Remaining unused peatland allocated for plantation; • High demand of wood based products; • Paludicultures and ecosystem services
  8. 8. Peralatan untuk Penanggulangan kebakaran Equipment of Fire Prevention
