Poster15: Prececal and Cecal In Vitro digestibility of tropical double purpose legume grains for pid nutrition

  • 1. Prececal and Cecal In-vitro Digestibility of Tropical In- Double Purpose Legume Grains for Pig Nutrition J. Torres1, C.A. Montoya2 , L.S. Munoz1, S. Martens3 and M. Peters3 1Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Palmira; 2Riddet Institute, New Zealand;3Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), AA 6713, Cali, Colombia Introduction I d i 80 CB LP PWU RWU WVU SB DH crud protein (%) a 60 ab b Double purpose legumes are a valuable source of protein (20-40% of DM) and carbohydrates (50-60% of DM) for human and animal a 40 a cd c nutrition in the tropics. Due to its high protein soybean meal is bc b d de most widely used for manufacturing animal feed Ho e er idel feed. However, b cd d 20 b e varying costs and sometimes limited availability of soybean meal c c c for animal diet formulation limits productivity for small farmers. Thus, the potential use of grains of alternative double purpose 0 0 120 360 legumes pig production was assessed, with particular attention to Time (min) digestibility of protein, sulfuric amino acid content and the Figure 1. Degree of protein hydrolysis in-vitro of soybean and in vitro presence of antinutritional f t f ti t iti l factors (ANF) (ANF). double purpose legume grains at 120 min (pepsin) and 360 min (120 min pepsin + 240 min pancreatin). Objective  There were differences in soluble nitrogen at 0 and 120 min between the raw legume grains (P <0.001). CB had a higher amount of soluble N (37 2 and 38 9%) which was lowest in (37.2 38.9%) To study the nutritional composition, in- vitro hydrolysis of soybean (11.3 and 15.8%) (Figure 1). proteins and in-vitro intestinal fermentation of tropical double purpose legume grains as alternative protein source for pigs.  At 360 min of hydrolysis, the protein digestibility of SB, CB and WVU had the highest DHCP (P <0.001). However, a correction for the initial soluble N (at time 0), suggests greater DHCP for SB. In CB high DHCP is influenced by the high Materials and Methods amounts of soluble N at 0 min. Also, the DHCP was negatively correlated to TIA (R2 = 0.64, P <0.05). Legume grains evaluated: Canavalia brasiliensis (CB), Lablab 80 p p purpureus (LP), Vigna unguiculata (WVU white, pink PVU, red ( ) g g ( p rch (%) VUR) using extruded soybean meal (SB) Glycine max as control. 60 We evaluated the nutritional composition including trypsin inhibitory activity (TIA). For enzymatic hydrolysis, legume grains 40 D sta were incubated in buffer solution at 39 °C with pepsin for 120 min, followed by 240 min of pancreatin. Aliquots were taken from c b a b a 20 H the incubation medium before (0 min), at the end of pepsin (120 ( ), p p ( min) and pepsin-pancreatin (360 min) addition. The degree of 0 hydrolysis (DHCP) was calculated on the basis of trichloroacetic acid soluble N, 7.5% as a percentage of total N. Aliquots were also CB LP PVU RVU WVU taken at 360 min to determine the degree of starch hydrolysis Figure 2. Degree of starch hydrolysis of grain legumes at (DHS). To measure final gas production (PGf ), prececal hydrolysis 360 min (120 min pepsin + 240 min pancreatin) of in-vitro was performed in-vitro (Boudri et al., 2003) and production of in vitro hydrolysis. hydrolysis short chain acids (SCFA) quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography, "HPLC" (Hartemin et al., 1997) after 72 hours of  The DHS was higher (P<0.001) for cowpeas as compared to fermentation. the other tropical legume grains (Figure 2).
