  11. PERSONALIZATION
  12. This is Imelda – she is a coffee farmer and lives in Pescador, Cauca. Tell her something useful….
  13. Getting sustained, personalized information services to farmers and the food system
  14. Preliminary data shows that successful ICT-enabled RAS could drive… 30-40% increase in yields 30-45x return in farmer income / dollar invested 20-25% increase in farmer income cost savings for public systems 10x >50% greater adoption rates SOURCE: Yield, income, ROI and cost targets are aspirational targets estimated for RAS investments based on evidence from existing models and dimensions of BMGF proposed investment. Dalberg study provides detailed data and methodology on impact and cost-effectiveness of RAS models.

  22. In summary…. • Huge promise, but only handful of success stories in smallholder systems. Plenty to learn! Fail forwards. • Need for appropriate technology for smallholder systems: new business models • Some of the challenges include: • Kickstarting a sustainable data ecosystem (requires institutional change) • Capacity building a new generation of agricultural scientists and field agronomists • Providing the enabling environment for services to be successful • Generating robust evidence on value for money, impact on gender/youth • Enormously exciting!

Editor's Notes

  1. The Big Data Platform presents a unique opportunity to help “data enable” the CGIAR but also to accelerate the digitization of the ag development enterprise as a whole. This is the ‘vision’ of the Platform, supported by three strategic pillars.
  2. Agriculture #23 out of 23 sectors in US in terms of digitalization
  3. 570m farms in the world, 72% less than 1 Ha, and produce 70% of food
  4. 6b have access to a mobile phone, more than have access to a toilet
  5. Farms surveyed by the CGIAR each year
  6. Farms surveyed by the CGIAR each year
  7. Three modules also serve as strategic pillars.
  8. We have developed a robust prototype of a CGIAR-wide data harvester. You can search across all CGIAR databases and we are developing the underlying logic that make it possible to search across domains and geographies. http://ceres.bigdata.cgiar.org/
  9. Also hosted 5 parallel ‘mini-conferences’ for five communities of practice furthering specific technical disciplines.
  10. We ran our own digital innovation process. CGIAR and non-CGIAR submissions required, for the categories here (soured from CRPs). 120 submissions from 37 countries.
  11. But only 5 could win. 100k grants to these teams to develop their ideas for 12 months.
  12. Help from the board: Help us build partnerships and connections to similar efforts Advocate for organizational change as relates to repositioning the CGIAR as a leadership voice: leading on open data, defining good data use for our sector, developing new data-driven business models and approaches.
