Community Center of Northern Westchester 2014 Highlights

  1. 1. 1 2014 Annual Meeting March 25th @ St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church - Bedford
  2. 2. 2 Over 1,800 families came to us for help in 2013, 10 times the number that came to the Center in 1992.
  3. 3. 3 183 tons of food were distributed to families during 6,982 Pantry visits.
  4. 4. 4 Fresh produce  Seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farms and cooperatives  MBIA Foundation grant provides funds during the winter months  Food Bank for Westchester provides “Green Thumb” produce
  5. 5. 5 Children comprise 34% of those who received food from the Center’s food pantry.
  6. 6. 6 Clothing Bank 87 tons of donated clothes, shoes and linens were distributed during more than 7,400 visits to our Clothing Boutique.

  8. 8. 8 Communication System Increases clients’ awareness and boosts attendance  Phone and text messages to clients for classes, workshops, and health clinics.  Messages sent in English and Spanish.  We have sent more than 30,000 phone messages and 20,000 text messages.  2 TV screens, one near Noya’s office and one in the Food Pantry, inform clients of their responsibilities, as well as CCNW classes and programs.

  10. 10. 10 English - Speaking to Writing  Course designed to improve writing skills  September to April  Connie Kamerman, instructor  15 students attending
  11. 11. 11 Building a Dream  Workshop on filing tax returns and creating one’s own business.  Guidance on Tax ID  Updates on immigration issues that affect our clients.
  12. 12. 12 ESL- Wednesdays & Saturdays  160+ students and 17 volunteers in 2013  Additional classes to accommodate clients’ schedules
  13. 13. 13 Computer Training and Career & Job Counseling  +100 computer students in 2013  +130 clients received career counseling in 2013  + 20 clients secured employment  7 volunteers
  14. 14. 14 One-on-One client assistance  Assistance in GED preparation  Individual English instruction  Assistance with the higher education application process  Additional English classes to accommodate clients schedule
  15. 15. 15 Child Safety Day  Brand-new car seats provided by the Bedford Police Department  16 local families were instructed on how to properly secure their children into car seats.
  16. 16. 16 Eat Smart NY  Cornell University Cooperative Extension course  Seven 90-minute sessions offered quarterly  Nutrition, food safety, healthy meal planning and physical activity  35 clients completed the course in 2013

  18. 18. 18 Breast Cancer Awareness YWCA of White Plains provides screenings at CCNW  123 clients participated during 2013  More than 50 women received free mammography
  19. 19. 19 More than 900 students attended classes and workshops to improve their skills in 2013
  20. 20. 20 OneSight Foundation Eye Exams  CCNW refers clients to LensCrafters locations in Mt. Kisco and White Plains  80 clients received free exam and glasses
  21. 21. 21 Northern Westchester Hospital Health Screenings  Nurses conduct monthly screenings at CCNW  Administer flu shots, osteoporosis/bone density screening, blood pressure, etc.
  22. 22. 22 School Supplies 670 children received new school supplies
  23. 23. 23 Holiday Share & Share the Warmth  Collect and distribute special holiday foods during November and December  Collect new warm children’s sleepwear and distributed to 747 children
  24. 24. 24 Prom Clothes Drive  Collect and distribute prom dresses and formalwear to local teens  60 girls received prom or party dresses and accessories  Special event at Elephant’s Trunk, Mt. Kisco
  25. 25. 25 Dowling Educational Scholarship  Provides financial assistance to qualifying students  6 students received scholarships in 2013
  26. 26. 26 Summer Camp Scholarships  30 children attended summer camp in Maine and New Hampshire
  27. 27. 27 We helped neighbors in need from 37 communities in Northern Westchester in 2013.
