  2. 2. The application economy is driving billions of dollars in new business in many industries … … but it also presents major new technology and security challenges. In a study sponsored by CA Technologies, Vanson Bourne recently surveyed 1,425 senior IT and business leaders across five industries (including 142 Chief Security Officers and Chief Security Information Officers) to understand how they were approaching the application economy and how it affected their IT and security decisions.
  3. 3. Responses were spread equally across five industries. This gives a unique opportunity to compare how each industry is approaching the application economy. How does your industry compare? How does your company compare to others in your industry?
  4. 4. Data breaches are the top security concern across industries, but there are other priorities … Perhaps stung by highly publicized hacks of media companies, Media puts “Protecting identities” as its number two priority. Retail and Healthcare put “Improving/supporting compliance/audit” as the number three security priority.
  5. 5. Security is about control for most companies, but Media and Telecoms are strong on enabling the business. Banking and Financial services firms seek a balance between control and enablement. “Controllers” responded that security was “entirely” or “mostly” about control, while “Enablers” responded that is was “entirely” or “mostly about enabling the business.
  6. 6. Telecom is the most open, with 85% of respondents having opened up access to their APIs.
  7. 7. Banking, Media and Healthcare are less open to partners. Retail, Telecoms and especially Media are open to suppliers.
  8. 8. Mobile apps are having the strongest impact on the security practices for external customers.
  9. 9. In three years, one quarter of IT spending will be devoted to Security. Retail will devote the greatest percentage of its IT spend on security, while Telecoms will see the greatest increase in its percentage of IT spend.
