THE CITY FOUNDATION <ul><li>The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded in June 24th, 1478, when the Spanish troops led by conqueror Juan Rejón sited a palm field on the right bank of the mouth Guiniguada ravine, where they set their military quarters. </li></ul><ul><li>In the zone around the present Ermita de San Antonio Abad, in the district of Vegueta, the city had its origins. The urban centre was soon moved to the Plaza de Santa Ana, where the most important religious, administrative and political organisms in the archipielago were established. From the district of Vegueta, the city streetched along the district of Triana. </li></ul><ul><li>The old part of the dates back to the 16th century and almost did not undergo any change until the late 19th. </li></ul>
  5. 5. The city of the Enlightenmet <ul><li>Between the 16th and the first half of the 19th century, the city experienced limited growth. By the end of the 18th century, there were some initiatives. As a result, streets were cobbled, the first sewers were dug and constructed and lamppost provided. </li></ul>
  6. 6. THE PUERTO DE LA LUZ AND THE CONTEMPORARY CITY <ul><li>A new rebirth took place by the second half of the 19th century. This time it was thanks to the cochineal trade and to the construction of the indisputable engine of the city: The Puerto de La Luz. In a few years time, what used to be a village became a trade centre, a universal capital city opened to the entire world. A new city centre started to grow around the port. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was about to undergo its great modern the city´s horizons. Its construction made its strategic location in the middle of the trasatlantic trade routes to be revalued. It also enable en approximation to Europe, the substantially increasing foreign trade. </li></ul>
