Many coffee lovers prefer organic coffee but just what is organic coffee? Organic coffee is a product that is grown using sustainable agricultural techniques. Organic coffee is free from the roughly 150 impurities that can be found in regular coffee. Organic coffee is processed according specified procedures and processed and shipped separately from regular coffee. USDA Organic Coffee is coffee that is certified directly by the United States Department of Agriculture of by one of their representatives throughout the world. Virtually all of the coffee consumed in the United States and Canada comes from outside of North America. Hawaii is the only state where coffee is grown in quantity. Growing Organic Coffee
What is organic coffee? It is an organic food. According to the USDA,
“… Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled ‘organic,’ a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.”
Organic coffee certification gives you the reassurance that what you are getting is good coffee, produced according to strict standards, and free of unnecessary impurities. When a small grower goes to the trouble of following organic procedures he follows through in drying his green coffee beans thoroughly.

What is organic coffee when compared to gourmet coffees? Many gourmet coffees are organically grown. The procedures needed to keep coffee free of impurities are also procedures that commonly result in better tasting coffees. Anyone who goes to the trouble and expense of producing healthy organic coffee will also work to use the best varieties, pick at the most opportune time, and process with care.
