  3. 3. What is a Supercharger?• A supercharger is a forced air induction unit that allows a motor to create more horsepower. The idea of a supercharger is very simple, more air and more fuel makes more power. A supercharger is a unit that is bolted to the intake of a car and is driven by a belt connected to the main pulley on the motor. The faster the motor spins the faster the blades inside the supercharger spin and more pressure or "Boost" is created.• The air in a supercharger is drawn in by the blades that pull the air in faster and faster, it is then forced into the pistons through the exit of the charger unit. Once the extra air is mixed with the proper amount of fuel a more powerful explosion is created then would naturally occur. The pulley size on a supercharger can be changed to increase the boost being created by the unit. Supercharging is preferable to turbocharging just for the fact that there is no lag as the unit spins up, unlike with a turbo. source: http://www.buyautoparts.com/howto/what-is-a-oxygen-sensor.htm

  5. 5. Understanding a Supercharger?• The supercharger is run mechanically by the engine. Its main function is to compress air and force it into the engine, thereby more fuel can be burnt and thus more power can be generated.• The supercharger has been around for many years now, almost as long as the internal combustion engine itself.• The term supercharging technically refers to any pump that forces air into an engine - but in common usage, it refers to pumps that are driven directly by the engine as opposed to turbochargers that are driven by the pressure of the exhaust gasses. A supercharger can be powered mechanically by belt, gear or chain-drive from the engines crankshaft.• Superchargers draw their power directly from the crankshaft. Most are driven by an accessory belt, which wraps around that and connects to a drive gear. The drive gear, in turn, rotates the compressor gear. the rotor of the compressor can come in various designs but its job is to draw in air, compress the air into a smaller space and discharge it into the intake manifold. To compressor the air, a supercharger must spin rapidly, even more rapidly than the motor itself. Making the drive gear larger than the compressor gear causes the compressor to spin faster. Superchargers can spin at speeds as high as 50,000 to 65,000 Rotations Per Minute (RPM)• A compressor spinning at 50,000 RPM translated to a boost of about 6 -9 Pounds Per Square inch (PSI). Thats six to nine psi over the atmospheric pressure at a particular elevation (atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.7 psi). source: http://www.buyautoparts.com/howto/understanding-a-supercharger.htm
  6. 6. Understanding a Supercharger?• There are three types of superchargers: – Roots – Twin-screw – Centrifugal• The main difference in how they move air to the intake manifold of the engine. Roots and twin-screw superchargers use different types of meshing lobes and a centrifugal supercharger uses an impeller, which draws in air. Although all of these designs provide a boost, they differ considerably in their efficiency. Each type of supercharger is available in different sizes, so much that a match can be done to the engine attributes, such as engine displacement. The biggest disadvantages is they steal power as the help generate additional power. Because the crankshaft drives them, they must steal some of the engines horsepower. A supercharger can consume as much as 20 percent of the engines total horsepower output, but because a supercharger can compress air and help increase more power, most think the trade-off is worth it.• An additional benefit is compared to a turbocharger is the initial response. As the supercharger is driven off the crankshaft, it will increase speed in the same rate as the engine, thereby having instant response and no lag.• er considerably in their efficiency. 9. 9. How to Install a Supercharger?• 1. After the removal of the components, be sure to cover any openings leading into your engine. Do not allow dirt or debris to contaminate your engine.• 2. Compare your old unit to the remanufactured unit. Transfer any additional external components that may be on the old unit to the new, in the exact orientation as on your old unit.• 3. Thoroughly clean all mating services.• 4. Install the new gaskets and o-rings that were supplied with the supercharger. DO NOT USE SEALERS.• 5. Properly align and install the remanufactured unit.• 6. If torque specifications were not listed in your service / repair manual, tighten the fastening bolts to 10 ft./lbs. evenly in a criss-cross pattern.• 7. When reinstalling fuel injectors, lightly lubricate the injector o-rings with engine oil prior to the installation.• Supercharger-to-manifold = 19 ft./lbs. Boost control actuator = 22 ft./lbs. Fuel rail = 11 ft./lbs. Your remanufactured supercharger has been factory-filled with a specially blended 75W-90 synthetic gear lubricant. Check this lubricant regularly, as described in your owner’s manual. 10. 10. Common Supercharger Failures Chartsource: http://www.buyautoparts.com/howto/common-supercharger-failures-chart.htm
  11. 11. Common Supercharger Failures Chart Explained • Superchargers are extremely efficient ways to make good and true horsepower on a vehicle. While a supercharger does create some parasitic loss, the horsepower it creates is worth the draw. A supercharger will last as long as the car if they are properly maintained but they do fail from time to time. Failure of a supercharger unit can be caused a number of ways and each of them has their early warning signs and specific way to be repaired. • There are 6 major types of failure that can strike a supercharger unit Growling, Clacking, Whistling, Gear Whine, Noise Increase from a smaller pulley, Noise and Vibration. • Growling - Occurs when debris in the supercharger causes the rotor to hit the housing. • Clacking - If this condition is present at idle but goes away under load then there is an idle issue. If the issue continues after engine rev then the coupler may be damaged. • Whistling - Supercharger units create a whistling sound from the air moving through the unit though if the sound is very loud there may be a vacuum leak. • Gear Whine - Gear whine is usually due to age but most commonly happens when the unit is run without oil. • Noise Increase - A smaller pulley will create more noise due to the increased movement of the air through the unit. • Just Noisy - Many times the supercharger is blamed for noise and needs to be checked by hand to determine if it is indeed the source of the noise. • Vibration - This is never due to the supercharger unit since the unit is balanced. The vibration is the engine. • Of course with any part it is a good idea to have the vehicle inspected by a licensed mechanic before making a decision about repairing or replacing a supercharger unit.source: http://www.buyautoparts.com/howto/common-supercharger-failures-chart.htm
