  1. 1. VISITINGTHE RESEARCH LIBRARY The Buffalo History Museum, December 2020
  2. 2. PlanningYourVisitYourVisit Good news! Museum and Library visits are free to all until the end of 2020
  3. 3. [PlanningYourVisit ] During December 2020, Library visits are by Zoom only But guests can still visit our building, tour exhibits in person, and enjoy our gift shop
  4. 4. [PlanningYourVisit ] Library appointments in December • We will meet with you in Zoom, answer questions in real time, and aim to show you collections virtually • We have one-hour appointments on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 1-5 PM • If pandemic conditions permit, we’ll resume in-person Library visits in January 2021
  5. 5. [PlanningYourVisit ] • The Museum and Library are closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays, and national holidays
  6. 6. [PlanningYourVisit ] Check out our catalog: Search FRANK • It’ll help you determine if the Library has what you need • If you send a wish list, we’ll aim to pull what we can in advance • library@buffalohistory.org
  7. 7. [PlanningYourVisit ] How to make a custom list from our catalog: • Click on any title. Then click on the Add to Clipboard button at the top left. • Finished? Click on the Clipboard icon in the left column. You can print or copy & paste your clipboard • The key pieces of information we need are author, title, and call number • Your clipboard will not be saved after you close or exit FRANK.
  8. 8. [PlanningYourVisit ] Or send an email describing what you are hoping to find; the more specific, the better. • Example of less specific: “What do you have on breweries?” • Example of more specific: “Do you have a picture of the brewery where my grandfather worked?” • library@buffalohistory.org
  9. 9. [PlanningYourVisit ] A couple of things we do not have: vital records • Official birth certificates, marriage licenses, and death certificates (vital records) are kept in government offices. We do not have copies. • For vital records in Buffalo, start with the Buffalo City Clerk: • www.buffalony.gov/276/City-Clerk • But we still have some awesome genealogy greatest hits
  10. 10. [PlanningYourVisit A couple of things we do not have: house plans • We do have plans & drawings from a few Buffalo architectural firms, but they are overwhelmingly for public buildings such as churches, schools, offices, and factories • The few house plans in these collections are for some high-end mansions • Unfortunately, 99% of the time, we do not have the plans for your house
  11. 11. [PlanningYourVisit ] Check out our digital projects • We have about 130 indexes, bibliographies, research how-tos, full-text works, finding aids, maps, and other online projects. They may help with your research.
  12. 12. [PlanningYourVisit The following items are stored off-site and may not be readily available for Zoom appointments: • Most oversized works on paper such as drawings, plans, blueprints, posters, broadsides • Negatives • A few dozen extremely oversized, heavy ledgers from a few manuscript collections • Periodical back issues - low-demand titles
  13. 13. [PlanningYourVisit Need digital images or reproductions for a gift, book, article, term paper, thesis, film, exhibit, or similar project? • Please ask us about arrangements! We fill orders like this almost every day.
  14. 14. [PlanningYourVisit Can I get a scan of this? • Yes! We can scan and upload a high-resolution file of an image to our Picture Store • There you can purchase a download, a museum-quality reproduction, and other custom merchandise • Downloads are 600 DPI JPGs and are accompanied by commercial use terms
  15. 15. Questions? library@buffalohistory.org (716) 873-9644 x 305
