Today we will learn and reflect on the history of the Peloponnesian Wars after the death of Pericles, through the Peace of Nicias that lasted half a dozen years before Athens embarked on the disastrous Sicilian Expedition, as told by Thucydides and Plutarch in his Life of Nicias. This period of history includes many of the most memorable stories told by Thucydides that reveal much of Greek culture and history, and how the enemies of the Athenian democracy fought for the freedom of the Greeks from the tyranny of the Athenian Empire. We will also reflect on how the battlefield deaths of the Athenian demagogue Cleon, and the Spartan leader Brasidas at the Battle of Amphipolis, led to the Peace of Nicias. We will also discuss: • The growing influence of Alcibiades, and his opposition to Nicias, and the Peace of Nicias, after the death of Cleon. • The general Demosthenes, and how he set up an Athenian naval base at Pylos, near the island of Sphacteria, forty-five miles from Sparta. • How Socrates saved the life of his student, Alcibiades, in the Battle of Potidaea. • How Delphi, location of the Oracle of Delphi, was declared independent in the Peace of Nicias.
