Technology Integration in the 21st Century Classroom

  1. 1. Taking Teaching and Learning Above and Beyond Technology Integration in the 21st Century Classroom Brittany Pulley
  2. 2. My approach to technology in the classroom: Students should use technology as a hands-on tool to communicate, collaborate, and think both critically and creatively. Having access to the ever-changing world of emerging technologies offers valuable learning opportunities for both the students and the teacher alike. Opportunity is the most important aspect that technology brings to the classroom. It is my job as the teacher to seize the opportunity and use it to craft and implement the most meaningful lessons for students. Using technological innovations to reinforce communication, collaboration, critical, and creative thinking for Common Core State Standards
  3. 3. Why integrate technology? To prepare our 21st century learners for their 21st century world. To provide students with real world engaging and interactive learning opportunities that will prepare them for college, career, and global citizenry.
  4. 4. What are 21st Century Skills? Communication Critical Thinking Collaboration Creative Thinking
  5. 5. 21st Century skills-communication It’s vital that students become effective communicators in all areas: written, verbal, and technological. I use email and the Remind app to communicate with parents about upcoming events, projects, and field trips. I utilize Google Classroom to communicate with students about assignments and progress. Students have the opportunity to communicate with one another through instant messaging, email, and Google Docs.
  6. 6. 21st century skills-collaboration I use online collaboration tools, such as Google Classroom and Google Drive, with my students as a platform to share thoughts, questions, ideas, and solutions. My students have collaborated on multimedia projects using technology such as tablets, chromebooks, and desktops to work together to reach a learning goal — putting talent, expertise, and tech savviness to work. Students must learn how to collaborate with their peers so that they are exposed to varying viewpoints, unique learning approaches, and experiences; it’s important that we all learn from one another.
  7. 7. Technology should be integrated throughout all content areas and encourage students to look at problems in a new way, linking learning across subjects & disciplines. My students use learning tools such as heart rate monitors to gather and analyze data during STEM lessons. They use Xoom tablets to graph and compare data. 21st century skills-Critical Thinking
  8. 8. 21st century skills- Creative thinking Utilizing technology in trying new approaches to get things done equals innovation & invention. Through project based learning, students in my classroom create media such as podcasts, videos, and slideshows to showcase their learning. When we enlist technology in the service of exploratory learning for all, watch out!
  9. 9. “There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails.” - Nancy Kassebaum I am always willing and open to learn about new technology and how to effectively use it to promote 21st century learning in my classroom. “We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” - David Warlick
