Production planning & control

  1. 1. Production Planning & Control R.K. Tomar
  2. 2. Production Planning & Control PPC is defined as the planning, direction and coordination of the firm’s material and physical facilities towards the attainment of predetermined production objectives in the most economical manner. Production Planning and control is referred to as operations planning and control because the production planning and control techniques used in production system manufacturing tangible goods can also be employed in operations or service system providing services.
  3. 3. Production Planning & Control PPC is a management tool, employed in direction of the manufacturing operations and their coordination with other activities of the firm. In the production system, which is primarily defined by the dimension of quality, time and price, the function of PPC comprise of 1) Materials :- Procurement, Storage, inventory Control and issue
  4. 4. Production Planning & Control 2) Methods :- Processes, operations and their sequences 3) Machines :- Loading of Jobs and Utilisation 4) Manpower :- Workers and skills 5) Routing :- Flow of Work 6) Estimating :- Operations Times
  5. 5. Production Planning & Control 7) Scheduling :-Time table of production, priority, sequencing and machine loading 8) Dispatching : -Authorising the start of operations 9) Expediting :-Follow up and keeping record of progress made 10) Evaluating :- Assessing the performance effectiveness
  6. 6. Production Planning & Control System
  7. 7. Functions of Production Planning & Control Department Production Planning & Control Production Planning 1) Estimating 2) Routing 3) Scheduling 4) Loading Production Control 1) Dispatching 2) Expediting/Follow -up/progressing 3) Inspection 4) Evaluating & Corrective action
  8. 8. Production Planning & Control Functions - Routing The Routing Function :- Under this, the operations, their path and sequence are established. To perform these operations the proper class of machines and personnel required are also worked out. The main aim of routing is to determine the best and cheapest sequence of operations and to ensure that this sequence is strictly followed. In small enterprises, this job is usually done by entrepreneur himself in a rather adhoc manner.
  9. 9. Production Planning & Control Functions - Routing The Routing Procedure :- Routing procedure involves following different activities. (1) An analysis of the article to determine what to make and what to buy. (2) To determine the quality and type of material (3) Determining the manufacturing operations and their sequence. (4) A determination of lot sizes (5) Determination of scrap factors
  10. 10. Production Planning & Control Functions - Routing The Routing Procedure :- Routing procedure involves following different activities. (6) An analysis of cost of the article (7) Organization of production control forms.
  11. 11. Production Planning & Control Functions - Routing The Route Sheets: This is a written specification or document which provide information and working data for conversion of raw materials into finished parts or products. Each step is indicated in the route sheet 1) Details drawings of parts and assemblies 2) Bill of materials 3) Quality Specs 4) Sequence of operations 5) Machines to be used 6) Tools, dies and fixtures to be used
  12. 12. Production Planning & Control Functions - Routing The Route Sheets: 7) Feeds and speed of machines 8) Labour Time standards 9) Operation sequence & data 10) Time Table 11) Handling and packing instructions
